Bangor YMCA official accepts new job in Mass.

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA has announced that its director of operations, Brian DuBois, recently resigned his position at the local community center.

DuBois has accepted the job of executive director at the Wendell T. Clark Memorial Community Center in Winchendon, Mass.

The position is in line with DuBois’ career goals and is also in his wife’s hometown.

“It seems to be a pretty good fit,” said DuBois, who spent more than three years in the Bangor job. “We wanted to get back there.”

DuBois accepted the position in Massachusetts five weeks ago, and his Bangor position was posted on the National YMCA Vacancy List on its Web site when he made his decision.

Executive director of the Bangor YMCA, Rob Reeves, would like to have someone fill the position soon, DuBois said. “But at this level, they have to consider carefully their options. They can’t make a rush decision,” he said.

Some candidates have expressed interest in the Bangor position, according to DuBois.

DuBois said that he would miss the children and the staff at the Bangor YMCA. When he and his wife first moved to Maine, she had insisted on not going north of Portland.

But when DuBois accepted the position at the Bangor YMCA in January 2000, the city “warmed our hearts. The people were so nice,” he said. “This will make it difficult to leave here.”

While serving as director of operations at the Bangor YMCA, DuBois worked with the directors of other YMCA programs. He also got involved in the Bangor Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce to get exposure for the YMCA.

DuBois has been involved with the YMCA ever since growing up in Auburn. He studied business management at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass. and began working at the YMCA by accident after graduating from college.

He was encouraged by a neighbor, who worked at the Lewiston-Auburn YMCA, to join the staff for a year and “give it a try.” He ended up staying for three years.

DuBois says he hasn’t regretted working in Bangor one bit. “The purpose behind the YMCA means a lot to me, as well as having impact on the families.”
