SOUTH PORTLAND – President Bush’s overall job approval ratings in Maine fell from 62 percent in April to 55 percent last month, according to a statewide poll released Friday.

The number of Maine residents who approve of the way the president is handling the situation in Iraq also has fallen, from 68 percent to 52 percent, the poll by Market Decisions found.

The poll showed 43 percent of Mainers approved of the way Bush is handling the economy, compared to 38 percent in April.

Gov. John Baldacci fared better. His popularity is growing, according to the survey.

The Democratic governor’s approval rating jumped from 59 percent in April to 65 percent in July, while his disapproval rating remained unchanged at 15 percent.

State lawmakers got a 51 percent approval rating in July, compared to a 50 percent approval rating in April.

The telephone survey was based on the responses of 400 Maine residents aged 18 and older. The survey has an error margin of 5 percentage points.
