BANGOR – Mr. Paperback stores were closed for four hours Thursday to honor the memory of Evelyn A. Foss, one of the bookstore chain’s founders.
Foss was vice president and her late husband, John C. Foss, was president of Mr. Paperback, Newspapers Inc. and Magazines Inc.
Mr. Paperback, based in Bangor, has 11 stores statewide, including Bangor International Airport. The chain, founded in 1963, provides a selection of paperback and hardcover books, greeting cards, gifts and magazines. In the past, the chain supplied several school systems throughout the state with affordable paperback educational books.
Foss was a graduate of Deering High School, Class of 1935, and a 1936 graduate of Northeastern Business School in Portland. She also was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. She is survived by four children and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in remembrance of Foss on Thursday afternoon at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel in Brewer with the Rev. Constance S. Chase Wells officiating.
Gifts in her memory may be made to Literacy Volunteers of America, 6 State St., Suite 515, Bangor 04401.
