I have been a baseball fan since 1945 and am a loyal supporter of the Bangor Lumberjacks. My wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed the games this year, win or lose. We’ve seen some close, competitive baseball and much good, clean family entertainment. We have met several players and found them to be tolerant, pleasant and willing to sign my baseball.
The players have become part of our community, participating not only in our Fourth of July parade, but sending a contingent to greet troops returning from Iraq. One player told me this was a highlight in his life, and we all know this meant a great deal to our fighting men.
Let’s not forget the cheerful and helpful employees of the Lumberjacks, who always take time to converse with us and answer questions at the mall office or the ballpark. I’d like to mention each of them by name, but I won’t for fear of missing someone.
Some negative and sarcastic remarks have been made about this team. The failed business theory “It won’t work because we’ve never tried it before” just doesn’t hold water. We have local ownership and a dedicated staff with a positive attitude. I am convinced this team will be here for a long time.
A tip of the hat to the Bangor City Council for their commitment to this sound project, and thanks to George Hale for his positive editorial, to the local newspaper and television stations, and FM 88.5 for team and game coverage.
Support the Lumberjacks – it’s fun for kids from five to 95. Thank you, Jack Timber, for making us all smile.
