Jehovah’s Witnesses

Founded: 1872.

Name: Adopted in 1931 to “reaffirm” Jehovah as the true name of God and to identify those who witness in Jehovah’s name as God’s specially accredited followers.

Membership: About 6.3 million members and 94,600 congregations worldwide. In 2002, more than 1 million active members and about 12,000 congregations were reported in the United States.

Publications: The Watch Tower Society publishes in 380 languages and calls on the services of more than 1,950 volunteers to assist with translations. In the early 1980s, a team of volunteers developed the world’s first multilanguage electronic phototypesetting system, which now has the capacity to process material in 447 languages, using 29 alphabets and character sets.
