Exploitation at the fair

Shame on the Bangor State Fair organizers. The presence of the “attraction” featuring people different from us has no place at our state fair. Is this the kind of exhibit we want to “entertain” our children and families with at our state fair? What is the message we are sending to them? Is it one of tolerance and acceptance?

Making money from human suffering or differences goes against all we strive to be as a community. How can we, in 2003, allow this to happen anywhere, especially at a city-sponsored event promoted as a family-friendly activity?

We must stand up and speak out against exploitation of any kind. Bangor should never be known as a place where such behavior is condoned. Perhaps next year fair organizers could bring in an exhibit that celebrates diversity and promotes tolerance.

Bangor can do better, and it must.
