Red Riots, Ponies square off Bangor travels to Portland to face Cheverus on Saturday

Week 2 of the high school football season finds area teams moving in different directions.

For Pine Tree Conference Class A programs such as Bangor, this is crossover week, with games against teams from the Southern Maine Activities Association.

For PTC Class B programs, it’s the first week of games against conference foes after a week of crossover battles against the Campbell Conference – except for Brewer, which has a bye this week and will play at Gorham in an exhibition game Saturday, and Old Town, which had its bye in Week 1 and will host Winslow in its season opener tonight.

For LTC Class C programs, meanwhile, Week 2 is business as usual.

Orono (1-0) vs. Foxcroft Academy (1-0), 7 p.m. Friday at Dover-Foxcroft: Foxcroft managed only one offensive touchdown in last week’s 19-6 LTC win against Maine Central Institute at Pittsfield, but got two defensive touchdowns on a 79-yard fumble return by Bobby Gilbert and a 54-yard interception return by Lincoln Robinson.

“What helped us was our depth,” said Foxcroft coach Paul Withee. “We didn’t execute very well offensively, but credit the MCI kids, they played extremely well defensively.”

Foxcroft’s offense typically involves a mix of run and pass led by senior quarterback Josh Withee (3 of 11 passing for 54 yards against MCI), and Gilbert (18 carries, 78 yards).

“It’s still the same old Foxcroft,” said Orono coach Wally Covell. “They do most everything right, they don’t make a lot of mistakes, and they force you to make mistakes.”

Foxcroft will be without 6-foot-7 wide receiver Brandon Hall, who suffered a knee injury while running a second-quarter reverse against MCI.

Orono is coming off a 29-0 win against John Bapst. Sophomore Marty Simon earned LTC Player of the Week honors, rushing for 78 yards and a touchdown while grabbing three interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown.

The Red Riots also got big efforts from Lance Cowan, who rushed for 87 yards and had two interceptions, and Ryan Levesque, who rushed for 62 yards and kicked three field goals.

“Orono’s pretty quick in the backfield,” said Withee. “They’re also quick defensively and really get to the ball, and they’ve got a good kicking game. They’ll pose some problems for us.”

Maine Central Institute (0-1) vs. Mattanawcook Academy (1-0), 7 p.m. Friday at Lincoln: This figures to be an LTC clash of size vs. quickness on the front lines.

“We’re not going to match up at all size-wise at the line of scrimmage,” said MCI coach Tom Bertrand. “We’ll need to try to use our athleticism and technique to our advantage.”

MCI is led by senior quarterback Ryan Bennett and newcomer Jonathan Smith, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior transfer from Pennsylvania who rushed for 86 yards in last week’s loss to Foxcroft and starred defensively at middle linebacker.

Mattanawcook is coming off a 30-14 win at Dexter that was in doubt until the Lynx stepped up with four fourth-quarter pass interceptions to stall the Tigers’ comeback hopes.

Offensively, MA got 143 total yards and two touchdown receptions from tailback Tyler Gardner along with fullback MacKenzie Haines’ 10 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown and three TD passes from quarterback Dustin Hanscom.

“Our primary focus right now is on what we do, and our goal is just to get better each week,” said MA coach Mike Carney.

Bangor (1-0) vs. Cheverus (0-1), 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Shea Field, Portland: These schools last met on the basketball court, where Bangor edged Cheverus in overtime to win the 2003 Class A state championship.

On the gridiron, Bangor hopes to build on its season-opening 42-14 victory over Edward Little to earn a similar result against the Stags.

The Rams rushed for 428 yards against EL, with tailback Mike Prentiss gaining 198 yards and scoring four touchdowns and fullback Ben Payson adding 119 yards. Quarterback Shaun Sullivan completed 8 of 11 passes for 74 yards in his first start.

“Shaun did a super job, and Mike and Ben and all of our backs ran well,” said Bangor coach Mark Hackett. “We had a size advantage going in, and the line played awfully well to make the holes.”

Cheverus lost to Bonny Eagle of Buxton 19-12 last weekend, a defeat first-year head coach Vinnie Salamone attributed to lost opportunities. The Stags turned the ball over once inside the Bonny Eagle 10-yard line, and another time inside the 15.

“For us, turnovers are crucial,” said Salamone. “We can’t turn the ball over in the red zone against Bangor like we did last week.”

Cheverus, 2-6 in 2002, returns 17 seniors this season, including quarterback Andrew Schober, running back-linebacker Kyle Bourgoin, and tackles Joe Rickoff and A.J. Paradis.

“They’re similar to us in a lot of ways,” Hackett said, “because they want to pound the ball and then throw off that.”
