Given the near-perfect weather conditions for Saturday’s state team golf championships, the Bangor High golf team figured it would take a lot of low scores to win the Class A title.
The Rams felt they could have shot better in the tournament at the Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro, but their consistency would be more important.
Sophomore Ben Estabrook shot a 74 to lead the Rams to a 305 and the Class A state championship, their first since winning two straight in 1978 and 1979.
Coach Gary Rees’ Dexter Tigers claimed their third straight Class C championship as Skye Dillon shot an 81 and the team finished with a 329.
Cape Elizabeth’s 303 won the Class B title.
Mt. Blue of Farmington’s Will Underkuffler, Telstar of Bethel’s Brady Chapman, and Buckfield’s Matt Lowell each shot 1-under 71s for the best individual rounds of the tournament.
In Class A, Bangor edged Thornton Academy of Saco by four strokes.
“We knew our scores were good but with the conditions we figured some kids from the southern part of the state would shoot some low numbers,” Bangor coach Rob Jarvis said. “We thought we could get maybe third or fourth.”
In fact, the Rams weren’t sure where they finished Saturday afternoon until the final Thornton golfer came off the course.
Estabrook, whom Jarvis said was involved in a qualifier to be one of the Rams’ five competitors, led the winners. Shawn Dennis shot a 76, Tim Hardy fired a 77, Zack Adair had a 78 and Steve Lucius carded an 83.
“He’s a young sophomore and he’s never been to the states like that,” Jarvis said of Estabrook. “But he certainly played stronger in the postseason than in the regular season.”
Bangor had just one defeat this season, a one-stroke loss to Nokomis of Newport at Palmyra Golf Club. The Rams won both the Penobscot Valley Conference championship and a league qualifier for states.
Chris Wilson led Brewer with a 72 and the Witches came in sixth overall.
Toby Spector of Waterville’s 73 was one of the lower scores of the day.
Brunswick was third with a 314. Westbrook and Lewiston both had a 315, but Westbrook was given fourth place in a tiebreaker.
In Class C, Matt Murray and Tim McCarthy of Dexter each shot an 82, just behind Dillon. Brett Towle had an 83 and Josh Whalen finished with a 103 to round out the Tiger top five.
Saint Dominic of Auburn was the Class C runner-up. Stearns of Millinocket, which was led by Brad Fitzgerald’s 79, finished third with a 362.
Jon Smith, last year’s Class C individual champion, shot an 80 as Calais was fourth with a 364. Telstar of Bethel finished fifth (373).
In Class B, the Capers had the low round of the tournament. Falmouth and Winslow were second and third, respectively. Camden Hills was fourth and Mount Desert Island was fifth.
Joey Provec’s 75 was the top score for the Windjammers, who shot a 314. Jake Willis shot a 73 to pace the Trojans (316).
Hermon’s Adam Duplisea, who tied for the Class B individual title last year, also finished with a 73.
