Bears beat MMA in offensive blitz

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Andy Brems rushed for 261 yards and four touchdowns as Bridgewater State beat Maine Maritime 56-44 Saturday at Swenson Field.

Bridgewater State (3-1, 2-0 NEFC) rallied from a 37-36 second-half deficit on the strength of a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Brems, including a 53-yard score with 6:56 left that gave Bridgewater State a 49-37 lead.

Paul Bryant threw for 148 yards and a touchdown and rushed for three touchdowns on 10 carries for the Bears.

Maine Maritime (0-4, 0-1 NEFC) remains winless despite scoring 27 points during a first quarter that saw the teams combine for 48 points. Don Thibodeau rushed for 134 yards and a score, Patrick Bard rushed for 125 yards and a score, and Mark Googins rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries for Maine Maritime.

The game saw 1,098 yards of total offense.

Amherst 31, Colby 0

WATERVILLE – Marsh Moseley completed 16 of 22 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns Saturday as Amherst beat Colby 31-0 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game.

Matt Monteith led the Lord Jeffs (3-1, 3-1 conference) with 132 yards rushing on just 11 carries, including scoring runs of 15 and 63 yards. For the game, Amherst gained 424 total yards, to just 123 for Colby (2-2, 2-2).

Colby’s Mike Civitello led the Colby defense with 11 tackles and three blocked extra-point attempts.

Wesleyan 23, Bates 20

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Quarterback Brennan Carney threw for a single-game record 396 yards and senior wide receiver Pat Moffett caught 11 passes for a team-record 282 yards as Wesleyan defeated Bates 23-20 on Saturday.

Carney, who leads the NESCAC in passing yards this season with 1,205 in four games, completed 21 of 43 passes.

Wesleyan (3-1) took the lead for good on Mofett’s 38-yard TD catch on the left sideline. Freshman Phil Banks added a two-yard run to cap an 11-play, 73-yard march late in the first half, giving Wesleyan a 17-7 cushion at intermission.

Bates (1-3) added two Nat Carr field goals to narrow the margin to 17-13, but Brennan Carney sneaked in from a yard out for the clinching TD with 4:48 remaining.

Hamilton 21, Bowdoin 20

BRUNSWICK – Brandon Holtslag passed for 177 yards and ran for 93 more as Hamilton hung on to defeat Bowdoin 21-20 and snap an 11-game losing streak.

Hamilton (1-3) took the lead for good on Holtslag’s 1-yard run midway through the third quarter. He scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter.

Bowdoin (0-4) was led by Rob Patchett, who rushed for 156 yards on 34 carries and scored a 4-yard touchdown. Tom Duffy passed for 135 yards, but was intercepted four times, including three times in the fourth quarter.
