Bangor police arrested a man after he allegedly tried to force his way into a house Monday afternoon.
Zane Schmauderer, 43, of Bangor was arrested on West Broadway and charged with burglary at about 1 p.m., according to police reports.
A resident of the West Broadway house said that she was coming home when she saw a man walking up the street toward Union Street. She said she was surprised to see the man walk right up her walk “as if he was a guest,” and then start shaking the door to force it open.
The woman said the stranger was so intent on the door that he didn’t notice her pull into the driveway beside the house and enter through a side door.
She said that the man continued to rattle the door while she called 911, but then stopped, rummaged through the mailbox, and started walking back down the street the way he had come.
“I couldn’t imagine his boldness,” the woman said, who said she wasn’t scared until she realized her husband wasn’t at home. She said the police apprehended Schmauderer down the block soon after she called.
A Bangor woman was hospitalized Monday afternoon after her car drifted into oncoming traffic and struck a large truck.
Bangor police Officer Ed Mercier reported that at about noon, Ann Gellerson, 25, was driving a two-door Chevrolet east on Burleigh Road when her car crossed the centerline for as yet unknown reasons.
Mercier said the car collided with a four-axle Kenworth truck, driven by Robert Hall, 52, of Old Town. Mercier said that Hall was unhurt, but damage to the front end of the truck was estimated at $15,000.
Mercier said the impact broke Gellerson’s leg, but she was conscious when he found her. Bangor Rescue took Gellerson to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where she was in fair condition Monday night.
Mercier said both drivers were wearing seat belts.
Bangor police arrested an Orland man Sunday night on a disorderly conduct charge.
Officer Brad Hanson reported that at about 10:30 p.m. he went to Pizzeria Uno on Stillwater Avenue, where an intoxicated man was reportedly trying to get into his vehicle.
Hanson said he arrived and spoke with witnesses, who told him a customer, Darren Carlow, 27, was too drunk to drive.
Hanson said he saw Carlow begin to stagger toward his car, and warned him not to drive. Hanson said he could smell alcohol on Carlow from six feet away.
Carlow told Hanson that he was just making sure his car windows were up.
Hanson called a wrecker to take Carlow’s car off the property at the restaurant manager’s request.
Hanson said that when Carlow’s car alarm went off, Carlow began sprinting toward the wrecker driver, repeatedly shouting at him and swearing.
Hanson said he feared Carlow would assault the wrecker driver, so he tackled him and put him under arrest for disorderly conduct.
