UM-Farmington sweeps Terriers

WATERVILLE – Zac Reed and Joe Mendell each picked up their first wins of the season, helping the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers sweep a doubleheader from Thomas College 2-1 and 4-3.

In the first game, Reed scattered five hits and Jason Cushman singled before pinch-runner James Writer came on to score the game-winner on an infield error in the sixth.

Scott Sibley homered for Thomas and Jevon Owens pitched well in defeat, hurling a five-hitter.

In the second game, two walks and an infield error led to two of the Beavers’ runs.

Nick Potts had three singles for the winners.

At Cape Elizabeth, Lucas Hannigan belted a pair of homers, a grand slam and a two-run shot, and Steve Osborne broke the Monks’ all-time hit record with a homer to lead St. Joseph’s to victory.

Dave Quintal owned the previous mark of 189 career hits.

Brent Dan had a stellar performance on the hill, giving up one earned run while striking out 10.

Nick Mirabello and Jesse LaCasse also had solo homers for St. Joseph’s.

Andy Lang and Jason Dority each had RBI singles for Southern Maine.

Mariners sweep Elms in the snow

At Castine, an afternoon snowfall couldn’t stop the Maine Maritime softball squad from sweeping conference foe Elms College 18-10 and 5-4 in a doubleheader at Ritchie Field.

In the second game, the Mariners’ Abbi Darling knocked home the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh with a single to the right-center that plated Tracy Forand.

Keryn Howland led the Blazers with two singles and an RBI.

In the first game, Stacey Ryan, who rapped a triple and two singles and added a pair of RBIs, paced the Mariners. Kristi Cooper smacked a double to go with three RBIs. Darling also had three RBIs.

The Blazers were led by Bree Smith, who had two singles and two RBIs.
