Canaan man charged in pawnshop burglary

CANAAN – A Canaan man has been arrested and charged with burglarizing Daniel Long’s Canaan Pawn Shop on Route 2 last month.

The pawnshop was forcibly entered and more than 30 guns were taken Oct. 29, according to Maine State Trooper Christopher Carr.

Late Monday, John Lingaitis, 35, of Nelson Hill Road in Canaan, was arrested and charged with burglary, theft of firearms and violation of a protective order.

Lingaitis had recently moved to Canaan from Massachusetts, said the trooper.

Carr said a search warrant was executed Monday night at Lingaitis’ residence by six other troopers and an agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Twenty of the stolen weapons were recovered along with other items from the pawnshop, including jewelry, knives and power tools.

Carr said Lingaitis violated the protective order because he had guns in his possession, which the order banned.
