BANGOR – Two men convicted in connection with an elaborate marijuana-growing operation at a camp in Franklin County were sentenced Thursday to prison.
Andrew R. Diehl, 39, was sentenced to 60 months in prison. His partner William Cumming, 33, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 37 months. Both also were sentenced to four years of supervised release and ordered to pay $100 in special assessments.
The men were arrested Feb. 29 by state drug agents after a search of a camp Diehl and Cumming owned in Phillips. The camp had been bought the year before their arrest and included 17 acres and a large storage building they equipped with high-intensity track lighting, exhaust and circulation fans, carbon dioxide enrichment systems and air purifiers.
Agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency also found 367 live marijuana plants and another 483 clippings from donor marijuana plants.
According to a court affidavit, Diehl and Cumming admitted to cultivating and distributing marijuana for unnamed out-of-state clients.
From an initial crop of about 180 plants, the two men expanded to a second crop in November 1999 that yielded 4 pounds to 5 pounds of marijuana monthly valued at $2,400 per pound.
