Lura Hoit Pool

HAMPDEN – The Lura Hoit Pool will offer a water safety and conditioning class for swimmers who have completed Level 5 beginning Feb. 10. The class is a combination of water safety skills and swim stroke improvement. For information, call 862-4305.

Hoop Classic

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department will hold its annual Duplessie State Farm Insurance Orono Hoop Classic basketball tournament for boys Saturday and Sunday, March4-5; and for girls Saturday and Sunday, March 11-12. The tournament is open to teams of fifth- and sixth-graders. No Amateur Athletic Union teams will be accepted.

Teams are guaranteed four games and players will receive a gift for participating. The fee is $125 per team or $240 for two teams – one for boys, one for girls. For more information, call the recreation office at 866-5065.

Soapbox Derby News

BANGOR – Registration for the June 2006 Eastern Maine Soapbox Derby will take place 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Bangor Parks and Recreation building, 647 Main St. The derby is open to youngsters ages 8 to 16.

Indoor winter soapbox derby races also are planned for children ages 8 to 16. Four indoor races will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18-19, and three indoor races will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25-26.

The Eastern Maine Soapbox Derby will hold an informational display for parents and children 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at the Bangor Mall. Derby cars, old race memorabilia, car construction and general discussion will be part of the display.

Brewer Wrestling Club

BREWER – The Brewer Wrestling Club will hold signups 6:30-8 p.m. on the following days:

. Monday, Jan. 30, Center Drive School, Orrington.

. Tuesday, Jan. 31, Brewer High School.

The cost for the program is $35.

The program is for middle-school pupils from Brewer, Orrington, Dedham, Holden and Bangor middle schools; and for peewees ages 2 and up.

Adult recreation programs

BREWER – The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department offers several programs at the Brewer Auditorium to encourage exercise, improve health and for socialization to help meet New Year’s resolution goals:

. Walking at the Brewer Auditorium, 6:30-9:30 a.m. Monday-Friday. The program is free. Those seeking more motivation may want to join the Winter Walkers Challenge Program, in which participants are challenged to walk 2,500 minutes before Saturday, April 1.

. Older Adult Exercise Program 9-10 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Features exercises designed to improve flexibility, strength and cardiovascular health.

. Volleyball pick up games, 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays.

. Wake up volleyball, 10 a.m.-noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

. Basketball open gym, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sundays.

. Basketball, noon-2 p.m. Tuesdays.
