‘Beautiful Blackbird’ author to visit library

BANGOR – The best thing about a public library is the books. The building is filled with a variety to choose from and every book has its right reader.

Librarians love watching or hearing about that magic moment when the right book gets in the hands of the right reader. Lives change, things happen, answers are found.

We, as librarians, are always trying to find ways to make this magic happen. We talk to people about books, we put together bibliographies and other lists of books, we write reviews and make displays.

But one of the most fun ways is to have an author come talk about his creation – which is why I’m happy to report that Ashley Bryan is coming to the Bangor Public Library.

Ashley Bryan, noted illustrator, an author and teacher from Cranberry Isles, is coming to the Bangor Public Library to talk about his creations at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Bryan’s illustrations are bursting with brilliant colors and the language in his books is lilting and magical. His works are infectious.

His newest addition to children’s literature is “Beautiful Blackbird,” a story from long ago, when Blackbird was voted the most beautiful bird in the forest. This adaptation of a tale from the Ila-speaking people of Zambia resonates both with rhythm and the tale’s universal meanings. His cut-paper artwork is a joy.

In person, Ashley Bryan is larger than life. His melodious voice and the power of his words rivet an audience. There is magic in the air and an unnamed rhythm pulsing through the room. Listening to him read and share his stories and poetry is an experience not to be forgotten.

Young readers and their parents and friends are invited to come meet this painter of tales and find out if his books are right for them.
