Avid archers looking to do a bit of shooting for a good cause may want to check out an event scheduled for Sunday.

The fourth annual Christmas is for Kids Charity Archery Shoot is on tap at two locations – The Archer’s Arrows in Hermon and the York Fish and Game Club in York.

The shoots are run by the Maine Bowhunters Association.

Both shoots run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Hermon shoot will be featured in live remote broadcasts by two local FM radio stations: Kiss 94.5 and 104.7 The Bear.

Learn to ski for free

American Skiing Company has decided that not knowing how to ski is no longer an excuse for avoiding the snow.

Beginning Jan. 5, ASC’s eastern resorts will mark Learn to Ski Month, during which new participants can learn to ski or snowboard for free.

Free learn-to-ski packages are offered throughout the month.

The free Learn to Ski/Ride Week kicks off at Attitash Bear Peak in New Hampshire on Monday, Jan. 5, and moves to another ASC resort each day.

Maine’s Sunday River will hold its program Jan. 8, while Sugarloaf’s is set for Jan. 9.

All guests who intend on taking part at any location must make reservations at least 72 hours in advance by calling the respective resort’s Perfect Turn reservation number. At Sunday River, that number is 824-5959. For Sugarloaf, call 237-6924.

In addition to the Learn to Ski week, each eastern ASC resort will offer a special midweek package during the month of January where guests can learn to ski or ride for free. Each package includes lodging and a free learn-to-ski lesson per person. There is a minimum two-night stay requirement and the package is not valid on Jan. 19.

Muzzleloader shoot planned

Area black powder enthusiasts can show off their skills Sunday as the Eye of The Hawk – part of the Knox County Fish and Game Club – will host its monthly muzzleloader shoot.

The shoot will be held at the covered range off Route 235 in Hope. Shooting begins at 9 a.m. and continues until about 2 p.m.

Hot breakfast and lunch are available in the heated clubhouse.
