Pickering helps Lee tip Blue Devils 54-52

LEE – Shelby Pickering’s basket with 18 seconds left lifted the Lee Academy Pandas to a 54-52 schoolgirl basketball victory over the Calais Blue Devils Saturday.

Pickering finished with 21 points and had six steals. Ashlee Gifford added eight assists and eight rebounds along with her 16 points.

Danielle O’Brien led Calais with 16 points, while Darcey Gillespie had three 3-pointers and 15 points and Traci Eagen had 13.

At T.J. Ryan Arena in Brewer, John Tuell scored the game-winning goal on a Tony Raymond assist at 3:51 into overtime to give Orono the come-from-behind win.

Tuell tied the game on an unassisted goal with 1:01 left in the third for the Red Riots. Tuell ended the day with a hat trick and an assist. Dylan Huckestein and Joe Fullwood each netted a goal. Keith Hedrick stopped 15 of 19 shots for 2-1 Orono.

Kevin Brooks scored three goals and had one assist for 1-1 Hampden Academy. Jason Huntley netted a goal and had three assists and Steve Boutin helped out with three assists. Rory Woods made 27 saves on 32 shots.

Presque Isle 5, John Bapst 0

At Sawyer Arena in Bangor, five different players scored for the Wildcats to give them the win over the Crusaders of Bangor.

Brandon Berube, Derrick DeMerchant, Sam Gagnon, Ben Sirois and Joe Collins all scored for 2-0 Presque Isle. Sean Daigle saved 17 shots for the shutout

Dan Leighton made 40 saves on 45 shots for 1-1 Bapst.

At Presque Isle, Matt Carey netted 15 points to lead unbeaten Foxcroft Academy to its third win of the season.

Ian Imbert and Greg Perry each scored 11 points for the Ponies.

Kyle Rideout scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds for Presque Isle. Matt McGlinn had 11 points and Matt Fowler added nine points and eight rebounds.

At Newport, Chris Dunlap made 12 of 14 free throws en route to a team-high 20 points as the Nokomis Warriors opened their season by defeating Edward Little of Auburn.

Dunlap also had four rebounds and four steals.

Evan McDaniel added 17 points and Nate Cahill 14 for Nokomis, and the two combined for 17 points in the second quarter when the Warriors outscored Edward Little 26-14 to take a 37-24 halftime lead.

Zack Wing grabbed five rebounds for Nokomis.

Ken Poulin led Edward Little, a newcomer to the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference ranks, with 28 points, while Ryan Ford added 18.
