Western New England College’s women’s tennis team recently completed an unbeaten season with help from Ellsworth native Monica Machon.

Machon, a sophomore, went 13-2 in both singles and doubles competition as the Golden Bears won 16 straight matches, the first unbeaten season in school history.

She paired with junior Jacqueline O’Brien to capture the No. 2 doubles title at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament. WNEC won the tourney crown.

Machon was named the Western New England College women’s tennis rookie of the year last season, during which she had a 20-6 record.

Higgins led Lady Bison

Pittsfield’s Hollie Higgins made an impact in just her first season of playing field hockey at Nichols College in Massachusetts.

Higgins, a freshman forward, scored seven goals and racked up 15 points to lead the Bison in both categories.

Nichols finished with a 6-11 record overall and 2-5 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.

King to skipper Hyannis team

Thomas College baseball coach Greg King has been named head coach of the Hyannis Mets for the 2004 Cape Cod Baseball League season.

King, a Benton native who is entering his eighth season as the Terriers’ coach, served as the skipper for the Cotuit Kettlers of the CCBL in 2003.

The 1991 UMaine graduate led Thomas of Waterville to NAIA New England titles in 2001 and 2003 and was the Maine Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000.
