A trip to Bangor to get a new muffler ended in the arrest of a Brewer man Tuesday after police noticed he was driving erratically.

Responding to a call from the Brewer Police Department, Officer Larry A. Merrill of the Bangor Police Department followed a tan Cadillac with a loud muffler to Birch Street, where Francis P. Brooks, 55, was pulled over for erratic driving at 12:50 p.m.

According to police reports, Brooks, who was suspected of being intoxicated, was slow and had poor balance. Brooks told Merrill he would need to rest for a little bit due to having some type of brain disease and, while not intoxicated, admitted to taking Klonopin, an anti-anxiety and anti-seizure drug, an hour before driving.

When asked why his license was suspended, Brooks told Morrill he didn’t know, but when questioned a second time admitted the suspension was for failure to pay a fine for an expired inspection sticker. Merrill noted the inspection sticker still was expired.

Brooks was arrested without further incident and charged with driving after suspension.

A Webber Oil truck was still missing Tuesday night after being reported stolen Tuesday afternoon.

Driver Charles Martin of Stetson left the keys in the red 1999 Ford F250 while parked in a back lot of the Holiday Inn on Main Street in Bangor. According to police reports, Martin was in the Holiday Inn for only 15 minutes.

Officer Myron Warner asked Webber Oil about possible suspects and was told that they hadn’t fired anyone lately and had no suspects. The truck is valued at $25,000.
