Area seniors spice up Old West in Y-Players show

The penmanship from the hand of the pianist who will celebrate her 89th birthday in September is beautifully strong and firm.

Perhaps it comes from all that wonderful musical exercise.

Once again, pianist Anna Wareing of Old Town joins director Pam Martin of Brewer in inviting members of the public to enjoy the talents of some of the most marvelous people around: The Y-Players.

Six performances of the Bangor-Brewer Y-Players 2001 show, “Home on the Range with the Y-Players,” will be presented now through mid-May, so mark your calendar for the date that is most convenient for you.

Having recently returned from “out West,” these “youthful” cowgirls will entertain you either at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29; 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1; 7 p.m. Friday, May 4; 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6; 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 8; or 7 p.m. Friday, May 11.

All of the shows will be in the gymnasium of the YWCA, 17 Second St. in Bangor, and your donations will help support YWCA programming and its Encore-Plus Breast Cancer Program.

Wareing reports that last year’s show “raised about $3,000” and it certainly would be great to see that amount increased this year.

Though finding she has “just barely enough stamina to keep the pace this year,” Wareing writes that “one thing in my life has remained constant: Music and playing the piano. The Y-Players have kept me involved in my golden years.”

This year’s cast is made of a terrific group of senior citizens who range in age from those who are only 65 to the 881/2-year-old Wareing.

Joining Wareing and Martin with songs of the Old West will be Barbara Urquhart, Pat Turner, Pat Brown, Marilyn Hodsdon, Julie Fish, Marie Miller, Judy LeClair, Barbara Nutter, Angela Phillips, Dody Simpson, Marion Tozier and Jeannette Perry.

“We have faced a lot of hurdles this year, what with weather cancellations, illnesses, falls and accidents from icy conditions,” Wareing wrote, but in the true tradition of theater, “we have given it our all and are enthusiastic about our cowpoke-cowgirl show,” she added.

Wareing promises those who attend “a lot of laughs, a lot of music and Pam Martin at her best.”

For her part, Martin extends her gratitude to all those who worked behind the scenes, such as Pat Buttons, and all the ladies who helped paint and sew.

Martin invites you all to attend, and to sing along with the stars, if you wish.

Members of the Bangor Area Children’s Choir want to share with you their “Capital Concert Music.”

The Choir represented Maine April 17-20 in the Festival of States celebration of the 225th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in Washington, D.C.

Directors Michele Hall of Bangor and Jean Sigler of Brewer thank folks from Bangor, Hampden, Hancock, Orono, Orrington and all the surrounding communities who supported the fund-raisers that made this trip possible.

Now they ask that you join them at 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, at All Souls Congregational Church on the corner of State Street and Broadway in Bangor to “hear what you have made possible, and let us applaud you.”

To thank you for your support, admission is free.

Speaking of great entertainment, here’s another opportunity coming right up.

The 21st annual AFS Follies is at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Veazie Elementary School.

Griff Lambert and Afton Cyrus will host the show, which features the comedy of popular Maine humorist Clyde Folsom of Bangor, vocals by Elena DeSiervo, skits by AFS students, and music of the Orono String Quartet and the Orono High School rock band, Husqvarna.

Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students. You also can purchase a beverage and a delicious homemade dessert for $2.50.

All proceeds benefit the Orono AFS Chapter Scholarship Fund.

Members of the Caribou High School Class of 1966 are planning their 35th reunion, which is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4.

They are, however, missing quite a few classmates and hope anyone with an address for them will help out.

Missing are Jodi Beck Ball, Joseph Caine, Joe Deering, Cheryl Kelley Goodwin, Penny Jo Hall Gore, Diana Saucier Hoy, Ronald Johnson, Robert Johnson, Gloria Drost LeBlanc and Ethel Levasseur, Donald Libby, Frederick Manzer, Earl Mazerolle, Diane Ouellette McLester, John Paradis, Judy Purrington, Edmund Saucier, Roneta Searles, Sharon Roberts Brown and Kristopher Anderson.

The Rev. Henry Wyman, representing the Forest Avenue United Church of Christ of Bangor, and the Rev. Joel Cyr of St. Teresa Roman Catholic Church in Brewer invite area church boards of deacons and deaconesses, and any other individuals, to join them for an “Afternoon of Religious Discussion” at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at the Forest Avenue Church.

The format for the afternoon is an introduction to the topic, “What do You Believe about Eternal Life?”

A discussion with the congregation will follow a short, introductory talk by Wyman and Cyr.

With a short worship service and refreshments, the event is expected to last approximately one hour, and everyone is welcome.
