BELFAST – Belfast’s Matt Woodrow and Nick Faulkingham combined to strike out 13 batters, with Faulkingham striking out the side in the top of the seventh to save a 4-3 baseball victory over Winslow for Woodrow (10 strikeouts) and the Lions Wednesday.

Ben Cowan belted an RBI double. Woodrow had the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth to put the Lions up for good. Faulkingham then pitched the seventh to earn the save.

Wes Zemrak blasted a two-run homer for the Black Raiders.

At Pittsfield, the Mustangs took advantage of three errors and two walks by the Huskies, and a three-run double by Lex Meagher, to score seven runs in the sixth en route to the win.

Brian Bernosky chipped in with an RBI single for Mount View of Thorndike.

Jake Laselle and Steve Kennedy each hit an RBI double for Maine Central Institute. Tom Twombly added two singles.

At Rockland, the Tigers plated six runs in the first two innings and made them stand up despite two late rallies by Erskine Academy of South China.

Tigers reliever Blair Drinkwater entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth, just after the visiting Eagles had scored two runs, and snuffed out the rally with two strikeouts.

Casey Kenniston led Rockland with two singles and an RBI. Drinkwater delivered a key hit with a two-out, two run single in the second inning.

Garrett Joslyn and Zeb Potter each hit an RBI double for the Eagles.

At East Sullivan, Mike Cowperthwaite pitched a four-hitter and struck out 13 to lead the Sumner Tigers.

Ricky Sprague’s two-run, one-out single in the bottom of the seventh gave the Tigers the win.

Matt Mercier slammed an RBI double for Searsport, Ben Relyea tripled and Jerod Kronholm had an RBI single. Hard-luck loser Pasco Grove struck out nine.

At Belfast, Morgan Crandall struck out 10, including two in the top of the seventh inning with a runner on third to end the game and seal the win for the Lions.

Crandall also scored the winning run in the third when she singled, stole second, went to third on a Mylie Collins fielder’s choice, and scored on a Kelsey Bryant single. Bryant added a triple and another RBI, and Collins had a double.

Winslow’s Katie Gagne struck out six in the loss. Six players singled for the Black Raiders.

A double play turned by second baseman Katie Adams to shortstop Amanda Leavitt to first baseman Mary Lancaster aided MCI in the fifth. Jasmine Jones paced the offense with a triple and double and Kristen Stevens stole home on the catcher’s throw back to the pitcher.

This was the first softball matchup played on the Ponies’ new multi-million dollar facility. Throwing out the ceremonial first pitch was longtime softball coach and athletic director Pete Caruso.

At Dover-Foxcroft, Zach Means belted a two-run triple to pace the Crusaders of Bangor to victory.

Like their softball counterparts, the Ponies opened their new multi-million dollar field. Throwing out the first ball was former UMaine player Roger Davis. Davis, a big supporter who helps out with the baseball team, has served as a custodian at the school for 20 years.

Joe Ronco smacked an RBI triple for the Ponies.
