WARREN – A local man was in fair condition Friday at Maine Medical Center in Portland from injuries he suffered in a Thursday afternoon crash on Route 131 blamed on speed and driver impairment.

John Porter O’Hara, 49, of Warren was initially taken by Warren Rescue to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, but was transferred to the Portland hospital. He was in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Friday.

O’Hara was traveling north on Route 131, also known as Oyster River Road, when he lost control of his 1994 GMC pickup truck due to speed and driver impairment, according to a report by Knox County sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Boyington. The report did not explain “impairment.”

The truck left the road and struck a large rock and several trees, which spun the vehicle around 360 degrees before it came to rest.

Damage to the truck from the 1:09 p.m. accident was estimated at $6,000, according to the deputy’s report. O’Hara was wearing a seat belt.

The speed limit in the area of the crash is 35 mph, Chief Deputy Todd Butler said Friday. O’Hara’s estimated speed was not yet available, and the accident was still under investigation Friday, Butler said.
