Peace and Justice Center launches new film series

ORONO – The Peace and Justice Center will launch its film series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at 110 Little Hall at the University of Maine with the Academy Award-winning documentary, “Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election,” the story about the battle for the presidency in Florida.

Films begin at 7 p.m. and discussion follows. Admission is free. The schedule is:

. “Hearts and Minds,” Feb. 12 – Academy Award-winning documentary on Vietnam War and lessons for future. The film is shown every year and is always followed by very emotional and informative discussion.

. “Uncovered: Whole Truth About the Iraq War,” Feb. 19 -a documentary.

. “The Rosa Parks Story,” March 17 – On Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to take a back seat on a segregated bus, which helped ignite the civil rights movement. The film follows Parks’ life and times. The film is shown in conjunction with Women’s History Month.

. “Fidel: The Untold Story,” March 25 – A Cuban film directed by Estela Bravo. It offers a close look at Castro through historical footage and interviews with Castro and such public figures as Alice Walker, Angela Davis and Nelson Mandela.

. “Bill Moyers Reports: Trading Democracy,” April 1 – The film covers legal aspects of NAFTA’s investor rules and shows the effects of NAFTA.

. “Affluenza,” April 8 – Having more stuff does not lead to happiness, and ramifications of insatiable consumerism are profound. The film offers positive solutions.
