Welcome home, captain

On Dec. 24, I, and a number of other soldiers returning from duty in Iraq, landed in Bangor on our way home to Fort Campbell, Ky. As we entered the terminal from the boarding gate we were met by a large number of men, women and children, who welcomed us back to the United States and thanked us for our service in Iraq.

Boy Scouts from a local troop handed out cookies. People handed us cell phones to use to call home, and everyone spent time talking with us.

This wonderful act of kindness and compassion made for a welcome home I will never forget. I will never be able to express my gratitude to the people of Maine who came out to the airport that day. Your warmth and generosity touched my soul, and I will always be grateful to you for giving us such a great homecoming.

Thank you very much.

Richard S. Taylor
