Ineligible player costs Lowell five wins

LOWELL, Mass. – Massachusetts-Lowell has forfeited five victories for using an ineligible player, the university announced on Friday.

The university, during a routine compliance review, discovered that the team had used an ineligible player who transferred to the school in the spring of 2003 but who had not gained eligibility for the 2003-2004 season. The university did not name the player, who played in nine games this season before the mistake was discovered.

Athletic director Dana Skinner reported the infraction to the NCAA on Thursday.

The River Hawks must forfeit two Hockey East victories against Massachusetts, one against Merrimack and non-league wins over Union and Michigan State.

With the forfeits, UMass-Lowell’s record drops from 13-11-3 overall and 8-4-1 in Hockey East to 8-16-3 overall, 5-7-1 in Hockey East.
