Senior Post-ing good stats for Presque Isle Wildcats shooting their way past opposition

The roster of the Presque Isle girls basketball team is loaded with spectacular shooters.

Michelle Post has been among the most spectacular. In one of the key stretches of the Wildcats’ season thus far, the 5-foot-6 senior forward nailed three 3-pointers to give PI a halftime lead over Caribou en route to a 57-40 win in the teams’ first matchup Jan. 7.

The ‘Cats are hoping Post has it in her again as one of the best rivalries in eastern Maine gets another crack Tuesday when the Vikings travel down Route 1 to take on undefeated Presque Isle in a 7 p.m. game.

Post’s shooting performance against Caribou in January wasn’t just a one-time thing. She’s been at it all season.

She had five 3-pointers in an 81-44 win over Fort Kent. Chalk up four more in an 84-27 victory over Bucksport. And in a two-game span in December she scored 44 points and knocked down 10 long-range shots, including five in the second quarter of a 58-40 win over Ellsworth.

Post has emerged in part because sophomore guard Kylan Smith has been on the bench off and on with shin splints.

“Michelle Post stepped in and since then she’s been unbelievable,” coach Jeff Hudson said.

Smith has played well when she’s had her chances. Her 3-pointer in the first half of Saturday’s game against Hermon helped spark the Wildcats to a key 55-49 win. Smith finished with nine points, Post had 14.

It was Presque Isle’s closest margin of victory so far this season.

Caribou is certainly capable of providing a close contest Tuesday night. Viking junior center Monica Selander scored a team-high 20 points in the teams’ first game, which was Caribou’s first loss in the first 11 games of the season.

Caribou is coming off two straight wins over Foxcroft and Bucksport, but the Vikes did lose a Jan. 20 game to Class C Houlton. They also fell to Hermon Jan. 10.

Belfast’s Gray accepts new role

In the years that Cassi Gray played basketball for the Islesboro Central School, double-doubles became a routine part of her seasons.

The 6-1 senior routinely scored at least 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in games playing a Class D schedule.

Gray made the move to Belfast this fall, and playing with the Class B Lions has been a big change. For one thing, the center doesn’t get as much playing time as she did with the Eagles. Gray spells 6-1 starter Kate Bailey.

“At Islesboro I never came out of the game, and that’s why my stats were so big,” she said. “Here I don’t get half the playing time I did, but I still love the competition. It’s so much better. Everybody loves the game here. It was easier to play there, but I love the competition here.”

Gray is 29 points away from the 1,000th of her career.

Gray’s family lives in Northport, so she started out at Islesboro because her father teaches French and Spanish on the island. She took the ferry from Lincolnville with him every day.

“I wanted a bigger school and more experiences,” Gray said after she played a few minutes in a win over Camden Hills last week. “I thought a big plus would be the basketball would be more competitive.”

Gray is actually on her third school – she spent her freshman year at a high school in Ogden, Utah. The family moved to Maine in 2001.

“Riding the ferry every day as a sophomore and junior was amazing,” she said. “Being from Utah, I really appreciate the ocean.”

Corson to sign with UMaine

Skowhegan field hockey standout Jessie Corson will sign a National Letter of Intent Wednesday to play at the University of Maine next year.

Corson, who scored three goals for the Indians in their 5-0 Class A state championship win over Deering of Portland last season, finished the season with 20 goals and 11 assists. She was named to the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference’s first team and Skowhegan went 15-0 last year. The Indians also won state titles in Corson’s sophomore and junior seasons.

She also played for the Maine Event, a travel team made up of standout players from around the state.

The Black Bears went 15-6 last season and lost in the America East Conference championship game.

Wednesday marks the beginning of the National Letter of Intent signing period.
