BSO maestro recital

To celebrate Leap Year, Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s Maestro Xiao-Lu Li will give a violin recital at Husson College’s G. Peirce Webber Campus Center at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29.

Li will perform “Sonata No, 5 in F major, op. 24, Spring” by Ludwig van Beethoven, accompanied by pianist Phillip Silver. Cellist Noreen Silver will join them to perform “Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, op. 8” by Johannes Brahms.

Tickets are $20, $10 for youth, and may be reserved by calling the BSO box office at 942-5555.

Displaced worker donations

The Bangor and Brewer Wal-Marts have set up at their exit doors a drop-off box for nonperishable food and monetary donations for the displaced workers of Eastern Fine Paper. The monetary donations will be allocated for fuel assistance.

Letters for Literacy

Literacy Volunteers of America in Bangor is sponsoring its second annual Letters for Literacy Feb. 14-21 in a booth outside Filene’s at the Bangor Mall. Sports fans may buy letters to promote their favorite teams in high school basketball tournaments.

Letters are $1 each and proceeds go toward efforts to teach adults to read. Several raffle tickets also will be available, including a Washburn acoustic guitar signed by the rock group 3 Doors Down.

Movies and soup supper

The River Cinema Society will celebrate Winter Weekend, sponsored by the Bangor Center Corp., with a double feature film and a soup supper at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Union Street Brick Church. The films will be shown on the society’s “cinema to go” big screen.

In “Ishmael,” a film made in Maine, winter surfers explore the frigid North Atlantic. Scarborough filmmaker and surfer Ben Keller will discuss his documentary and explain what leads surfers to seek the icy waves.

The second film, “Nanook of the North,” introduces the audience to the beautiful yet alien Arctic world of the Inuit people. In what is acknowledged as the first feature-length documentary film, Robert Flaherty presents Nanook and his family in a dramatic narrative of daily survival in a severe environment.

Between films, a choice of soups, chili and chowder will be served. Bread, dessert and beverage will complete the meal. Child care accreditation

The National Association for the Education of Young Children, an organization for early childhood professionals, has awarded accreditation to two Penquis CAP child care sites, the Cleveland Street and Job Corps child care centers in Bangor.

The accreditation recognizes that the centers have reached the highest professional standards and assures families that children in the programs are getting the best care and early learning experiences. Maine families who enroll their children in an accredited site are allowed a double child care tax credit on Maine income taxes.

Accreditation puts the Penquis CAP child development program in the company of more than 8,000 early childhood programs, serving nearly 750,000 children. To learn more about Penquis CAP child care programs, call 973-3534.

The Eddington Historical Society will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Eddington Church. The group is looking for information on the oldest resident to receive the Boston Post Cane.

Etna

Firefighters grant

The Etna Fire Department was awarded $103,365 grant in the latest round of firefighter grants.

Michael Brown, undersecretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, announced 216 grants to fire departments through the United States in the 31st round of fiscal year 2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The grants will eventually total approximately 7,000 awards worth $750 million in direct assistance to firefighters.

Orono

Kindergarten registration

Parents of children who will be 5 years old on or before Oct. 15 are requested to register their children for kindergarten from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 2. Registration is by appointment. A legal state birth certificate, or a copy of the birth record, is required at the time of registration. A record of the dates of immunization also will be necessary in completing the registration forms. It is necessary that all children who expect to enter school next fall receive communicable disease immunizations. Valentine Dance

All first- through fifth-graders and their respective dates – Mom or Dad – are invited to attend the annual Valentine Dance sponsored by the Orono Parks and Recreation Department, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at the Orono Middle School Gym.

DJ Todd Ogden will provide music. Snacks, refreshments, games, prizes, and a chance to have a memorable photograph by Sally Sinclair Photograph will be available.

Sixteen Head Start children visited Stetson Public Library in December, according to the library newsletter.

Story time for preschoolers, and their adult relatives or sitters, is held 10-11 a.m. Tuesdays at Stetson Public Library. A light snack is provided. Bring your own beverage. For information, contact Kirsten, 296-3559.

The sixth annual Canines For Kids Ice Fishing Derby will be held 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14. The weigh-in station will be at White’s camp, Herb’s Landing, in the northeast corner of Stetson Lake.

There is a $5 entry free, but no fishing license is needed for the youngsters, as it’s Kids Fish Free Day.

The third annual sledding party will be held Feb. 16 during school vacation at Don Carroll’s house, 209 Stetson Road. Bring your own sled. Refreshments will be provided. Kids should bring an adult with them. To learn more, call Jen at 296-3100.

Valentine’s Day supper

The Veazie Congregational Church will sponsor a special baked bean Valentine’s Day supper from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at the church, 1404 State St. There will be a door prize of homemade candy, chocolate desserts, and a sing-along of favorite love songs. The cost is $6, $3.50 children.

Maine-ly Harmony

Four area women are members of Maine-ly Harmony women’s barbershop chorus, which will perform in the rotunda at the State House in Augusta at 8:15 a.m. Monday, March 1.

Yvonne Drake, Dixmont; Jan Flowers, Winterport; Lynn Rogers, Levant; and Sue Staples, Bangor, are members of the chorus, which also will sing the National Anthem before the beginning of the House of Representatives session at 9 a.m.
