Historic Maine sites nationally registered

AUGUSTA – The East Eddington Public Hall has been named to the National Register of Historic Places, along with two other sites in the state, the Maine Historic Preservation Commission announced this week.

Each site on the register has been documented, evaluated and considered worthy of preservation and protection as part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Properties in the state are constantly being evaluated throughout the year to determine their eligibility. Once a site has been listed in the national register, the property is deemed eligible for protection from the adverse impact of federal government projects and may receive grants to maintain the property.

The East Eddington Public Hall is a large, gable-fronted, Italian-influenced frame building in the center of East Eddington village.

Constructed in 1879, the two-story frame building has been an integral part of the town’s agricultural history by hosting town meetings, social and cultural events.

Also named to the national register, the Higgins Barn in the Indian Point section of Bar Harbor is a significant example of the English barn form executed with above-average craftsmanship and one of the earliest structures on Mount Desert Island. The remaining site added to the register is the Norton House Historic District in Falmouth Foreside, an eclectic Prairie-style house built on a high ridge overlooking Casco Bay.
