Bangor

Police Athletic League

The Bangor Police Athletic League reopened Feb. 16 after being closed for renovations. Hours this week during school vacation are noon-6 p.m. Next week’s hours will be 3-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon-5 p.m. Saturday while there is snow.

Creative Arts Program

Registration is now in progress for Penobscot Theatre Company and Brewer Youth Theatre’s cooperative Creative Arts Program. Rich Kimball, assistant principal of Brewer Middle School, and Penobscot Theatre actors-teachers will lead the program. Workshops take place at Brewer Middle School and culminate in final performances at the Bangor Opera House.

Sessions include Youth Camp, Musical Camp and Shakespeare Camp at Brewer Middle School. Advanced Acting Camp classes take place at the Bangor Opera House. For information about schedules and cost, call the Penobscot Theatre box office at 942-3333.

Churchmen’s League

The Churchmen’s League will hold a supper and meeting tonight at 6:30 at Hammond Street Congregational Church. Guest speaker will be Chief Barry Dana of the Penobscot Nation. Dana will discuss efforts and goals involving the casino issue, tribal lands, resource management, tribal enterprises, heritage and culture, and maintaining traditional values.

The cost of the supper is $3. Call the church at 942-4381 to make reservations.

Talk about the Allagash

Tim Caverly, director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, knows and loves the Allagash. He served as regional supervisor for the Allagash Wilderness Region, retired after 32 years with the Maine Department of Conservation and still works to protect the Allagash.

Caverly, a Millinocket native, will present a slide program, “Allagash, A National Treasure at Risk,” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Bangor Public Library. He will introduce the audience to the establishment of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway as a wilderness river and as part of the National Wild and Scenic River System. He will consider the threats the Allagash faces today and talk about what steps may be taken to ensure its protection.

Bangor Elks

The Bangor Elks Lodge 244 held a dinner dance Jan. 10 to mark the official visit of Elks Maine State President James Ferland of Presque Isle Lodge 1954 and National Leader Amos McCallum of Biddeford-Saco Lodge 1957, who was accompanied by his wife, Barbara.

Bangor Elks Lodge member Joan Glans said that state lodges have donated more than $10,000 to the Elks National Foundation, which gives scholarships to deserving high school graduates. Other contributions have been made to the Maine Children’s Cancer Fund, hospitalized veterans in Bangor and other Maine veteran’s homes, and to those presently serving in Iraq.

Business Ownership 101

Penquis Community Action Program will offer Business Ownership 101, 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St. The class will provide an overview of the pros and cons of operating a microenterprise, what a business is and why it is needed, and resources for business development assistance. MS Walk

The Maine Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society announced that Manpower, a statewide staffing service with offices in Bangor, will sponsor the MS Walk, planned for Sunday, April 18 and May 16. Those interested in volunteering to help organize the walk in the Bangor area or in forming a walk team should call 942-8604.

City proclamations

The Bangor City Council issued proclamations recognizing Company E, 120th Air traffic Control Services, Maine Army National Guard, and Detachment 14, Operational Support Airlift command, Maine Army National Guard. Both units were deployed to Afghanistan.

Company E was cited for its role in providing air traffic control in and around Kandahar, for providing tactical approach services to aircraft at a forward operating base on the Pakistan border and for insuring safe air operations during combat missions.

Detachment 14 was cited for providing short-notice air transportation to passengers and cargo for the U.S. Army and Department of Defense, and for providing transportation to U.S. and coalition forces within Afghanistan, and to and from Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Medical society auxiliary

The Auxiliary to the Penobscot County Medical Society recently donated $500 to Eastern Maine Medical Center’s pediatric unit to purchase DVDs, games and craft supplies for patients. The auxiliary also keeps the unit’s kitchen pantry stocked.

The auxiliary is a charitable organization of physicians’ spouses dedicated to providing camaraderie among physicians’ families and welcoming new families to the area.

The auxiliary also provides several $1,000 scholarships to nursing and medical technology students attending Husson College, Eastern Maine Community College and-or the University of Maine. Applications for the scholarships are available at the schools.

Brewer

Auction, dinner, talent

The Charles O. Howard Foundation will hold a silent auction, dinner and talent show 5:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Jeff’s Catering on Coffin Avenue. The cost is $15 per person. Tickets are available at Creative Flowers, 25 Hammond St., Bangor, or by calling 942-9319, or 299-0561.

Proceeds from the event benefit the foundation, which plans to create a monument in downtown Bangor in memory of Howard.

Benefit concert

A benefit concert will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Brewer Auditorium to benefit displaced Eastern Fine Paper mill employees. The concert will feature the River City Salon Orchestra of Bangor and other talent. A donation of $5 per person is suggested.

Snow Creation Contest

The Penobscot River WinterFest will take place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29, and feature entertainment and activities for the whole family. As many as 18 teams are needed for the Snow Creation Contest 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Teams may have as many as 10 members, with at least one person under age 18. Teams of five or more must have at least half of its members under age 18. Participants will be eligible for prizes of up to $500. Raffle drawings also will be available. Hampden

Bowl-a-thon

The Hampden Children’s Day committee is planning a Bowl-a-thon at noon Saturday, March 6, at the Sports Arena, formerly Heritage Lanes, Outer Hammond Street in Bangor. Registration is at 11:30 a.m. The event will benefit the 25th annual Hampden Children’s Day celebration in August. Teams of four will collect pledges and compete for various prizes. The Children’s Day committee will provide the bowling lane and shoe rental.

The committee asks that bowlers have a minimum of $25 in pledges per team member, or $100 per team. For more information, call Amy Lorenzo, 862-5522, or Don Darling, 947-2866.

Orono

Candidates’ Night

Five candidates for the Orono Town Council and school committee will present their views and answer questions in a public meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the Orono Town Council room. Orono High School students will moderate the session.

Tom Spitz, Tom Botkin and Mark Haggerty are running for two seats on the Town Council. Incumbents Bryan Pearce and Nick Houtman are not running for re-election. Shane Stafford and Jim Artesani are on the ballot for two positions on the school committee.

Candidates will give a brief statement about why they are running and answer questions from moderators and the audience. The session will be broadcast in Orono on channel 7 of the Adelphia cable system.

Maine Engineers Week

Missy Cummings, a former Navy fighter pilot and currently a cognitive systems engineering professor in the MIT aeronautics and astronautics department, will be the keynote speaker at the Maine Engineers Week banquet 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the Black Bear Inn and Conference Center. The cost is $35 per person.

Cummings is the author of “Hornet’s Nest.” She will discuss how improvements in technology have changed pilot-plane interaction and how the changes affect engineering practices. Cummings also will meet with youngsters Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Maine Engineers Week Expo at the University of Maine Fieldhouse. Evening knitting

Knitters who would like to make hats, booties, sweaters and blankets for premature babies are invited to gather 6-8 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Stetson Public Library. Knitters should bring their own needles and yarn. Patterns are available at the library. Call Becky Anderson at 296-2020 for more information.

Winterport

Kindergarten registration

The Leroy H. Smith School will hold kindergarten registration 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday, March 1, in the school library. Children must be five years old on or before Oct. 15 and legal residents of Winterport in order to attend kindergarten at the Smith School for the 2004-05 year. Parents must bring the child’s birth certificate – a hospital birth certificate is no longer accepted – immunization record and a recent photograph. Statewide

Maine Handicapped Skiing

Maine Handicapped Skiing is conducting its 19th annual Ski-A-Thon fund-raiser Saturday March 20 at Sunday River Ski Resort and the Sunday River Inn & Cross Country Ski Center in Newry.

To participate in the Ski-A-Thon, teams of five people raise a minimum of $600 in pledges. Each team member receives a free lift ticket or trail pass, breakfast, lunch, dinner, a T-shirt and a goodie bag.

Proceeds from the Ski-A-Thon help Maine Handicapped Skiing offer free lessons in downhill and Nordic skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing to more than 250 participants with physical disabilities each year. In summer, the program offers those with physical disabilities lessons in canoeing, kayaking, hand cycling and golf.
