Gracie powers Husson to win UMF men, women victorious

BANGOR – Holly Gracie scored 23 points and had five assists as No. 1 seed Husson advanced to the North Atlantic Conference tournament semifinals with a 66-48 women’s basketball victory over Maine Maritime Academy of Castine Tuesday night.

Annie McIntosh grabbed 15 rebounds and had 10 points for the Braves. Megan Hughes added 13 points and Sarah Davis 11.

Michelle Gott posted 13 rebounds and 12 points for the No. 8 Mariners. Meghan Moore netted 14 points, and Amanda Johnson had five assists.

At Farmington, Karen Simpson led UMF with 18 points. The win advanced the Beavers to the NAC semifinals, where they will play against Castleton State.

Karen Simpson netted 14 points and six assists. Danielle Mayer recorded 10 rebounds, six assists, and four steals; while Kate LaHaye added 11 points.

Courtney Corbett scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Tammy Fowler had another 13 points, and Ashley Hataway and Kim Drosdik each scored 11.

At Gorham, Tiffany Jones led four Huskies in double figures as Southern Maine won its 22nd consecutive game, an 89-47 Little East Conference quarterfinal verdict over the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Ashley Marble and Jen Webster each posted a dozen points for top-seeded USM, and Donna Cowing had 10.

Denise Ridge topped the No. 8 Beacons with 14 points.

Men’s basketball

UMF 70, Elms 61

At Chicopee, Mass., the fifth-seeded University of Maine-Farmington Beavers pulled away in the final two minutes and used a balanced scoring attack to defeat No. 4 Elms in North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal action.

UMF advanced to a Friday semifinal against No. 1 Lasell in Newton, Mass.

UMF’s Bob Deetjen nailed a 3-pointer with about two minutes left to put the Beavers up 59-56 and they wouldn’t trail again. Luke Nielsen added a conventional three-point play to help secure the win.

Travis Magnusson paced UMF with 18 points, Deetjen put in 12, Nielsen added 11, and Steven Ginn had 10. Nielsen also had eight rebounds and Ginn notched five assists.

John Ancrum scored 26 points for Elms, and Deshawn Hawkins added 14.

At Castleton, Vt., Sean Manovill scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead No. 3-seeded Castleton to the narrow win over No. 6 Maine Maritime Academy of Castine in North Atlantic Conference tournament quarterfinal play.

John Galarneau contributed 19 points for Castleton, which will play No. 2 Husson on Friday.

Matt Clement, the NAC player of the year, led the Mariners with 30 points and 17 rebounds. Adam LeClair added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Nick Depalmer netted 18 points for the No. 8 Terriers of Waterville. Adam Rick followed with 13 and James Godley with 11. Both Dan Grappi and Ryan Conrad had 10 points.

Plymouth State 75, USM 70

At Plymouth, N.H., second-seeded Plymouth State went on 16-4 run over a five-minute span late in the second half to hold off No. 7 University of Southern Maine in an opening-round Little East Conference playoff game.

USM had battled to take a 52-51 lead with 7:27 left.

Andreas Pope came off the bench to spark Plymouth State with 21 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Mike Loughlin added 20 points for the winners.

Ryan Garland and Jay Casterella each scored 13 points to lead USM. Jason Levecque and Derek Lovely each chipped in with 11 points and Mike Francoeur had 10. Francoeur also had five assits.
