Cross country skiing enthusiasts will get their chance to compete locally on Sunday, as the Great Caribou Bog Wicked Winter Ski Tour and Race will be held in Bangor.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. at Essex Woods, at 703 Outer Esssex Street, and the 17-kilometer race begins at 1 p.m. A new, easier BogLoppet Short Tour will also be offered, as will a free children’s tour. The children’s tour begins at 1:30, but a parent must be present.

In the past, the race has been popular with those who enjoy both racing and touring.

Woods walk shoot scheduled

The Penobscot Longrifles will hold their monthly shoot on Sunday at their range in Stetson.

The “Woods Walk” shoot begins at 10 a.m. The cost is $20 for nonmembers and $15 for members. The price of admission includes prizes and a hot lunch.

The Penobscot Longrifles range is on the New Sweden Road, off Route 143.

Ice anglers get Web site

If you’re an avid ice angler, you may want to check out a new Internet Web site that was created with Maine ice fishing enthusiasts.

The site, www.mainehardwateranglers.com, allows ice anglers to post messages in the chat room, share tips, and offer lake reports.

Another feature: the “Warmup Special,” which offers favorite on-ice recipe suggestions for anglers.

Mushers post high finishes

Jen Buswell and Morgan Saunders of Corinth posted good finishes in dog sled races held in Dover-Foxcroft last weekend.

Saunders finished third in the Junior 3-Dog Speed class at the Maine Highlands Challenge, completing the 8-mile course in 29 minutes, 21 seconds.

Buswell took fifth in the 4-Dog Speed class, touring the 8-mile course in 27:09.

Advanced fly-tying offered

The Penobscot Fly Fishers are offering advanced fly tiers the chance to learn new techniques and practice their tying in a five-week course to be held in Bangor.

Classes begin on Thursday, March 4, and will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Course registration costs $25, and the class will be limited to 24 students. All students will be responsible for providing their own materials.

Wyman Lake derby on tap

The Upper Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce in Bingham is sponsoring its third annual Wyman Lake Ice Fishing Derby on March 5-7.

Registration and weigh-in will take place at the Moscow boat launch. Tickets cost $10 per person, and a $1,000 prize is up for grabs for the largest game fish.
