My wife and I have watched the budget debate in SAD 48 with increasing alarm.
Five years ago we purchased a home in Corinna with the intention of making a lifetime commitment to the town and the area. We hoped it would be a good place to raise our children and take part in community life. Our intention was to work on the recreation and library committees when our children were old enough to participate in those activities. We had hoped to add to the community in many ways, however, this will probably not happen.
It is unfortunate that some people in the community would rather send a message to the state than look out for the best interests of children.
Obviously these people do not grasp the concept that young families bring energy and an interest in working for the communities they live in. Properly funded schools attract those families, neglected ones will drive them away. I am afraid the short-sighted interests of these people will drive away other young families like ours.
