Orrington man charged for assaulting girlfriend

Old Town police arrested an Orrington man after he allegedly beat up his girlfriend Tuesday night.

Officer Lori Renzullo reported that just before midnight an officer with the Indian Island police called to say a woman there had reported an assault that happened in Old Town.

Sgt. Scott Casey and Officer Thomas Adams went to Main Street, where the suspect, Ryan Ring, 27, of Orrington, was believed to be on foot.

Officers Renzullo and Brent Fournier went to speak with the alleged victim. She told them she drove Ring to a convenience store on Main Street. She gave him $20 to buy cigarettes, and when he came out with a 12-pack of Bud Light instead, she told him to return her money.

The woman said Ring was drunk at the time. He grabbed her by the hair on the back of her head, she said, and began hitting her head against the shifter in her car. When she head-butted him in the face, Ring began punching her in the stomach, she said.

The woman told Renzullo that she is eight weeks pregnant with Ring’s child, and that Ring knew so. She told him to get out, so he left the car and reportedly kicked her a few times in the side.

Renzullo said she didn’t see any marks on the alleged victim except some swelling above her lip. The woman acknowledged that there were no marks under her clothes, either. Her shirt and pants were spattered with blood, which she said came from Ring’s nose after she head-butted him. There also was blood in the woman’s car.

Officer Adams said he heard that Ring was walking on Route 178 in Bradley. Adams said Ring appeared intoxicated. Ring denied assaulting the woman, and said she punched him in the nose during a squabble over his drinking.

He also told Adams the woman attacked him a second time after he left the convenience store because he refused to get in her car. Renzullo told Adams she believed Ring was the aggressor in the incident. Adams arrested Ring and took him to Penobscot County Jail, where he was charged with domestic assault.

Bangor police arrested a Brewer man early Thursday on a disorderly conduct charge.

Officer Eric Tourtelotte reported that at about 1 a.m. he and other officers went to the parking lot of the Ramada Inn, where a fight had been reported. Tourtelotte said the lot had cleared out by the time he arrived. He took a look around and, as he returned to his cruiser, he saw a man jump onto the hood and start hitting the hood and windshield with his hand.

Tourtelotte said the man, later identified as Iver Cardwell, 23, of Brewer, then stood in front of the cruiser and started yelling swears and calling the police “pigs.”

Tourtelotte told Cardwell that if Cardwell touched his cruiser again, he would be arrested. He then told Cardwell he was free to go. Cardwell appeared to be intoxicated. As he left, he walked into Officer Brad Hanson, who Tourtelotte said pushed him away for his own safety. The officers told Cardwell he shouldn’t drive because he was drunk. Tourtelotte said that Cardwell’s responses to the officers were all sarcastic.

Officer Michael Jewett told Cardwell to leave the property. Cardwell said he would but didn’t move, Tourtelotte said. Jewett then repeated the order, and pushed Cardwell on his shoulder, Tourtelotte said.

A short time later, Tourtelotte found Cardwell sitting in the driver’s seat of an SUV in the parking lot of the inn. Tourtelotte approached and told Cardwell that if he attempted to drive he would be arrested.

Tourtelotte said that while he was contacting dispatch to ask about Cardwell’s history, Cardwell got out of the SUV. Tourtelotte told him to get back in. Tourtelotte said Cardwell refused, got in Tourtelotte’s face, and started swearing and complaining about how badly the officers had treated him. Tourtelotte arrested Cardwell for disorderly conduct. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail.
