Jewel of Canada focus of exhibit

BANGOR – Jim Counihan, a local photographer and member of the Eastern Maine Camera Club, will present “Summer’s Island,” a photographic tour of Canada’s Prince Edward Island, beginning Friday, April 2, at Bangor Public Library.

“Prince Edward Island is Canada’s smallest province, but it is also one of the country’s most scenic provinces,” said Counihan. “The photographs in this exhibition come from nearly all areas of the island, and in a small way reflect the beauty – natural and manmade – to be found by photographers, artists and tourists.”

Counihan’s love of photography began more than 40 years ago when he received a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera as a birthday present. Since then, he has acquired and used a variety of cameras and lenses from simple Yashicamat medium-format twin-lens reflex cameras to sophisticated Nikon 35-millimeter equipment.

“In this exhibit, ‘Summer’s Island,’ as in all my work,” Counihan said, “I let natural light be the leading element of each photograph. The clear northern light, combined with the island’s humidity, helps create rich colors reflected by the various subjects I’ve photographed during my visits. There’s no question that Prince Edward Island holds a special place in my heart and imagination.”
