Burgess, Bates propel Piscataquis

MILO – Randy Burgess singled twice and doubled while Buddy Bates hit three singles to help pace the Piscataquis Pirates of Guilford to a 13-4 high school baseball win over Penquis Wednesday.

Scott DeCastro belted a two-run homer in the seventh and singled for the Pirates. Buddy Leavitt tripled and singled, and John Luellen singled twice.

Justin Dean hit three singles and Levi Ladd had two singles and an RBI for the Patriots.

At Newport, junior lefty Justin Veazie threw a three-hit shutout in the nightcap, striking out six and walking three.

James Lister knocked in two runs with a first-inning double and sixth-inning single and he also had another base hit. Veazie had an RBI triple.

Jonas Bard doubled for Presque Isle.

In the opener, Aaron Keirstead had a two-run single in the four-run first-inning rally and finished with four base hits.

Marcus Nadeau had three singles and R.J. Gagnon doubled, singled and delivered two runs.

Shawn Henderson, Ian Buzzanoskie and Tyler MacKenzie had two singles each for Nokomis.

At Pittsfield, Marcus Bizier’s run-scoring double snapped a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning and Dave Whitney followed with an RBI double.

Mike Harrington had a double and a single and knocked in a run for the winners and Matt Budrow singled twice. Chris Carter notched the win in relief.

Andrew St. Claire had three singles for MCI and Steve Kennedy had a pair of base hits. Each knocked in a run.

At Dexter, southpaw Jason Weymouth fired a seven-hit shutout, striking out six and not walking anybody, as Foxcroft triumphed.

Rob Crocker had an RBI single in the three-run fourth-inning rally that snapped a scoreless tie.

Dana Grass tripled and singled for the winners and Seth Gabarro had two base hits.

Derek Sawyer had two base hits for Dexter.

At Rockland, Blair Drinkwater hit two home runs, a three-run shot in the second and a two-run shot in the third, plus an RBI single to lead Rockland’s 15-hit attack over previously unbeaten Belfast.

Greg Harjula had a double, two singles and three RBIs for the Tigers. Shane Dow had three singles and two RBIs while lefthanded starter Parker Tootill had two doubles and three RBIs to support his own cause.

Ben Cowan, Kevin Gray, and Paul Button each singled for the Lions.

At Thorndike, Will Dennen pitched a two-hitter over six innings, striking out six and walking one, and Peter Moro paced a 13-hit attack with a solo homer and two doubles.

John Butler had a double and two singles, Grady Peck tripled and drove in two runs and Abe Dugal had a two-run single for the winners.

Chris Carman and Ryan Harnden had singles for Mount View with Carman’s knocking in the only run.

At Blue Hill, Hans Reuter hit a two-run home run and singled twice to lead a 14-hit attack for unbeaten George Stevens Academy.

Chris Sargent had three singles and two RBIs for the Eagles of Blue Hill. Mark Clapp had two singles and an RBI.

Nick Beaulieu had a two-run triple while Anthony Arsenault and Dave Michaud each had an RBI single.

At Corinth, John Crocker pitched a three-hitter while striking out seven and walking one to lead the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx of Lincoln to the win.

Delany Wilkes singled twice, doubled, and drove in three runs for the Lynx. Matt Malone had a three-run homer in the third and singled. Fred Pete hit a solo shot in the sixth, doubled, and drove in three runs.

Presque Isle 10-19, Nokomis 2-0

At Newport, lefty Kristen Guiggey scattered 10 hits in the opener and three in the nightcap to supply the Wildcats with their first two wins of the season.

Guiggey struck out five and didn’t walk anybody in the opener and had four strikeouts and one walk in the abbreviated nightcap.

Nokomis was without five starters, who were on a band trip.

Sarah Belden had a run-scoring triple and Jessica Miller had an RBI single in the opener.

Laura Pelkey’s three singles and Tina Turner’s two base hits paced Nokomis.

In the second game, Melissa Pelletier drove in four runs with a triple and a double, Lauren Wildeman had a triple, two singles and an RBI and Miller had a pair of base hits.

Pelkey had one of the Nokomis singles.

At Milo, Megan Russell (1-3) earned the first win of the season for herself and the Penquis Patriots by striking out 10, walking just three, and notching two singles and an RBI on offense.

Arielle Sickler led Penquis with three singles and two RBIs. Erika Morrill had two singles and two RBIs.

Caterina Riitano had two doubles, two singles and three RBIs for the Pirates of Guilford. Ivy Galuski had two singles and two RBIs while Lacie Hanscome had two singles and one RBI.

At Dexter, Kristy Veazie belted three doubles, a single, and drove in five runs as the Tigers prevailed.

Briley Belanger knocked in a pair of runs on a single and a double. Cindy Koscinenly and Brittany Veazie each had a pair of singles.

Leah Cartwright’s single was Foxcroft’s lone hit.

Mattanawcook 18, Central 4

At Corinth, Brandi Rideout and Kylee Allen each belted two-run homers to lead the Lynx past the Red Devils.

Cassie Carver had a pair of singles to go with a pair of RBIs for Mattanawcook of Lincoln, who took advantage of nine Central walks in the first two innings.

Jess Kaelin blasted a solo homer for Central. Shawna Bell added a triple and a single.

At Rockland, Ashley Lowe provided a two-run single in the sixth to propel the Tigers past the Lions.

Morgan Dean had an RBI single for Rockland. Pitcher Kirby Gushee had six putouts in the circle.

Ashley Bryant paced the Lions with a pair of singles. Kelsey Bryant, Kim Walker, and Melissa Gray added one single each.

At Blue Hill, Jamie Wood hit two doubles, two singles, and drove in three runs as the Eagles prevailed.

Elise Bishop knocked a pair of RBI singles for the winners.

Kristina MacKenzie led the Minutemen of Millinocket with an RBI single while Jordan Lagassey hit a triple and a single. She scored two runs.

At Thomaston, Jana Martin was strong in the circle, fanning 13 batters as the Tigers prevailed.

Ashley Woodcock belted a two-run homer for the winners and knocked in four. Kelly Leclerc hit three singles for Jay while Trista Dube had two.

Lindsay Barlow notched a two-run single for the Buccaneers in the loss. Lacey Stone and Krista Brochu each had RBI singles.

At Howland, Rebecca Stratton rapped a double and two singles to pace the Wolverines.

Lynn Farrington, Angela Sherwood and Beth Chasse added two singles apiece for Schenck of East Millinocket.

Erica Coyle stroked a double and a single and drove in a run for the Howlers. Megan Cyr, Sarah Colbath and Kylie McGinn contributed an RBI single each.

Correction: A Camden Hills baseball player was incorrectly listed in a story in Thursday’s paper. His name is Brady Butler, not John Butler.
