Governor frowns on joke

AUGUSTA – Gov. John Baldacci was not amused by a bogus April Fools’ day story in a Maine newspaper.

The article in Thursday’s Coastal Journal said pricey tolls would be charged on the Sagadahoc Bridge, which connects Bath and Woolwich, starting next month to raise emergency state revenues.

A spokesman for Baldacci said the falsified story created confusion and prompted a flurry of calls and e-mails to the governor’s office.

Baldacci said he has a sense of humor, but he thinks there are better ways to make people laugh than making light of Maine’s current fiscal condition, difficult budget negotiations and tough economic challenges many people face.

The state is facing a $160 million budget shortfall.
