Woman rescued after leap off Maiden Cliff

CAMDEN – A 44-year-old woman was rescued after jumping from a steep mountainside in Camden Hills State Park Monday night.

Police said the woman was airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after a rescue operation involving 20 local police and fire officials, Knox County sheriffs’ deputies and state game wardens.

Camden Police Chief Phil Roberts said the woman attempted suicide at an area known as Maiden Cliff. The first call came in at 8:37 p.m. and she was located at about 11 p.m. Monday.

The woman plummeted about 50 feet and was barely conscious, bleeding badly and cold when rescuers arrived, a spokesman for the warden service said.

The rescue, which ended early Tuesday morning, was carried out in snowy conditions and freezing temperatures over steep and rugged terrain.

Roberts said the woman received head and leg injuries, which are not considered life-threatening.
