Reed’s slam sparks Beavers

WATERVILLE – Zach Reed ripped a grand slam and tossed a complete game to lead the University of Maine-Farmington to a 9-2 college baseball victory over Colby on Wednesday.

Kris Garrow, Peter McLaughlin, John Rutkiewicz, and Eric Cummings each notched two hits for the Beavers.

Tyler Hales led the White Mules with an RBI double.

At Lewiston, Charlie Engasser singled in two runs to key a three-run fifth inning for the Bobcats.

Adam Sheehan sparked the Braves of Bangor with a two-run single. Justin Spencer hit a double and added two singles, while Josh Ferguson had a triple and single, Jason Folsom contributed a double and single, and Shawn Henderson posted a pair of singles.

UMPI drops twinbill

At Newport News, Va., Kellyn Johnson and Ryan Scott each pitched five-inning no-hitters as The Apprentice School swept a doubleheader from the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 12-0 and 14-0.

In the first game, Johnson struck out four and walked just one, while catcher Darrell Taylor went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Brook Elks went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Aaron Rideout took the loss.

In the second game, Scott struck out eight and walked three. Elks went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a three-run homer.

Seth McCrossin took the loss for UMPI.

At Brunswick, Greg Stacy hit a solo homer and added two RBI singles as the Huskies of Gorham rolled.

Kevin Bougie sparked the Polar Bears with a solo homer.

Thomas sweeps MMA

At Castine, Thomas College scored 27 runs in two games to sweep Maine Maritime, 10-0 in the opener and 17-2 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Joy Ireland no-hit the Mariners, striking out 11 and walking four for the Terriers of Waterville. Kayla Beaudoin and Misty Bickford each drove in a pair and Bickford added a double for Thomas.

In the second game, Courtney Corbett earned the win, going four innings and giving up one run on three hits for Thomas.

Bickford went 4-for-4, including a double and a homer for the winners.

Abbi Darling paced the Mariners with an RBI single.
