Fun at the library

BANGOR – A variety of activities have been scheduled for school vacation week at Bangor Public Library.

Annette Ruppel Rodrigues, Huberta Barrett and Judy Simms will teach traditional Austrian and German folk dances, the Sternpolka and the Siebenschritt, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 20.

Mother Goose story time will be held for children up to 24 months old at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 21. Other story times will resume after school vacation.

At 10 a.m. April 21, Sandy Cyrus of Full Circle Yoga will present Yoga for Kids for kindergarten through grade five. Please register in advance.

At 3 p.m. April 21, Junior Girl Scout Troop 505 will host story time with games and rhymes for preschoolers.

Celebrate Earth Day at 3 p.m. April 22. Bring work gloves to help pick up and rake the grounds. Meet in the story room. Helpers will be treated to a snack after the cleanup.

Jody Scalise and Linda Peck, also known as Double Vision, will present an upbeat performance on tobacco and substance abuse prevention at 10 a.m. April 23. Incorporating mime, music and juggling into their performance, they are both funny and informative. The performance is sponsored by Bangor Region Partners for Health.

“Meet the Artist” at 11 a.m. April 24 in a workshop with Jenya Sakaeyva-Jodrey and her mother. Her exhibit, “My World,” has been on display at the library. She is first-place winner in the 2002 YMCA Armed Services Awards.

The library will be closed April 19 in honor of Patriots Day.

Bangor Garden Show

BANGOR – Those who won accolades for their work to support the Bangor Garden Show and for their entries in the show are:

Business Partners Award: Bangor Daily News and The Weekly.

Community Service Award: Arthur Stockus.

Premier Vendor Award: Serendipity Arts.

Premier Educational Booth: University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and Hancock County Master Gardeners.

Maine Landscape and Nursery Award: First-place tie between Greencare Interior Plantscapes and McGlinn’s Wee Gardens and Sully Gardens, a joint entry.

People’s Choice Award: McGlinn’s Wee Gardens and Sully Gardens, a joint entry.

Gwethalyn M. Phillips Landscape Award: Black Bear Lawn Care.

Door to Door Garden Club Design Competition: First, Kennebec Valley Garden Club; second, Blue Hill Garden Club; third, Presque Isle Garden Club; and fourth, Hampden Garden Club.

Outstanding Committee Volunteer Award: Susan V. Poole.

Roaring ’20s

BANGOR – The YWCA Y-Players are doing a tribute to the Roaring ’20s. Showtimes are various days and times. All proceeds benefit the YWCA’s Caring Connections program. For information, call 941-2808.

April 17 traffic detours

BANGOR – The Bangor Police Department wishes to remind motorists that because of the Kenduskeag Canoe Race on April 17, there will be two traffic detours:

. Inbound traffic on Broadway, Route 15, will be diverted at Six-Mile Falls onto Finson Road to Ohio Street between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. To avoid congestion and delays, motorists should use McCarty Road to Ohio Street.

. Traffic on Valley Avenue will be diverted onto Bruce Road between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The detours are necessary for the safety of race participants and spectators.

VFW Auxiliary activities

HAMPDEN – The Ladies Auxiliary of Whitcomb-Baker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4633 will elect officers April 21. Members also are asked to bring items for packages to be sent to local troops in Iraq the first of May.

Anyone who knows of someone from this area serving in Iraq who would like to receive a package or cards should contact Dorothy Clukey at 862-3214 with the name and address. Packages will be sent as names are received. Items for the packages are also welcome.
