Mainville, Riitano power USM

GORHAM – Katie Mainville tossed a no-hitter as the University of Southern Maine softball team earned a 2-0 victory over Salem State in the first game of a Thursday doubleheader. The Huskies won the nightcap 3-2.

In the first game, Mainville struck out nine and allowed just one baserunner. Christen Lachappelle and Emily Forbes each had RBI singles while Kristen Tong tripled, all in the fourth inning.

In the second game, Caterina Riitano launched a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win for the Huskies.

Ashley Woodcock doubled and scored on a passed ball.

Cindy Gill slapped a two-run double for the Vikings.

UMF splits with Thomas

At Farmington, the Beavers split with rival Thomas, with the Terriers of Waterville winning the first game 6-4 and the University of Maine-Farmington taking the second 8-0.

In the opener, Courtney Corbett hit a three-run homer to carry Thomas to the win.

Jen Couture added a double for the winners.

Kristi Cochin had a sacrifice to drive in a run for the Beavers.

In the second game, Stephanie Moriarty one-hit Thomas in five innings of work with nine strikeouts.

Mary Berry doubled and singled twice while Cochin knocked a two-run single for UMF.

Jasmine Carey singled for the Terriers’ lone hit.

UMPI sweeps MMA

At Castine, the visiting Owls took two from the Mariners, 8-0 in the opener and 8-4 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Danielle Lee doubled, singled twice, knocked in three runs and pitched a one-hit shutout for UM-Presque Isle.

Sarah Nason knocked two singles and drove in two runs and Monique Daniel added two singles with an RBI.

Abbi Darling singled for the Mariners’ lone hit.

In the second game, Vallerie Lenentine tripled, singled and drove in four runs to key the Owls.

Scarlet McAvoy launched an RBI double and Lee pitched another complete game.

Darling, Jess Clifford and Amanda Stover each had RBI singles for the hosts.

Bowdoin sweeps Colby

At Brunswick, the Polar Bears won two games in their last at-bat, taking the first 3-2 and the second 4-3.

In the opener, Sarah Thomas knocked in Megan Rodgers with an RBI single to give the hosts the victory.

Rebekah Metzler and Gillian Stevens added RBI singles for the winners.

Emily Allen and Wendy Bonner had RBI singles for the Waterville-based Mules.

In the nightcap, Megan Wyman reached on an error, scoring pinch runner Sonia Weinhaus with the winning run for Bowdoin.

Danielle Chagnon singled in a run and Rodgers knocked a two-run double for the Polar Bears.

Annette Caswell singed in a run for Colby.

Plymouth State sweeps St. Joe’s

At Standish, the Monks were shut out twice by Plymouth State, 7-0 and 4-0, respectively.

In the opener, Michelle Knox homered twice and doubled, totaling four RBIs for the winners. Kim Jeffs pitched a two-hitter with 17 strikeouts for Plymouth State.

Helena Liaci doubled and Jamie Morrison singled for the Monks.

In the second game, St. Joseph’s was no-hit by Rose Eaton, who fanned seven and walked one.

Jess Rousselle doubled and knocked in three runs for the winners.

Nick Vardaro added a two-run single for USM while Greg Stacy notched an RBI single.

Tony Scola had a sacrifice fly and RBI groundout for the Vikings.
