Classical concert on tap Sunday at UMaine

The Bangor Symphony Orchestra will be joined by the University of Maine Singers and the Oratorio Society for its fifth Classical Concert of the season, set for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Maine Center for the Arts.

The program conducted by Maestro Xiao-Lu Li will include “Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber” by Paul Hindemith; Variations on “America” by Charles Ives; and “The Pines of Rome” by Ottorino Respighi.

Joining the orchestra will be the University of Maine Singers and Oratorio Society, performing opera choruses of Ruggero Leoncavallo, Verdi and Puccini. Leoncavallo’s “Bell Chorus” from “Pagliacci,” Puccini’s “Humming Chorus” from “Madama Butterfly,” and Verdi’s “Anvil Chorus” from “Il Trovatore,” “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” from “Nabucco” and “Matadors Chorus” from “La Traviata” will be the featured works.

Following the concert will be “Good Fortune,” a silent auction, to be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Alumni House, University of Maine.

“Good Fortune” features live music by BSO musicians on piano, marimba, flute and classical guitar and eastern and western hors d’oeuvres. Items up for bid include a 2004 Subaru Outback and a timeshare condominium.

Concert tickets range from $12 to $35 for adults; $6 to $18 for youth under 18; with senior and UMaine student discounts. Admission to the auction, to benefit the BSO, is $35 per person. Reservations for either can be made by calling the BSO office at 942-5555 or (800) 639-3221. More information is available on bangorsymphony.com.
