Luminaria ceremony

OLD TOWN – A special luminaria ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Old Town High School during the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Greater Bangor will be held in memory of those who died of cancer and to honor those who have survived the disease.

Those who wish to purchase a luminaria can do so by calling Mike Hart at 989-0332. The cost is $10.

“It will be beautiful when all the bags with candles in them are illuminated around the track,” said Shanna Allen, chairwoman of the luminaria committee. “We hope to sell enough to light the entire area.”

Relay For Life, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, May 14, with a survivors’ lap around the track, is an overnight event where teams gather to walk all night to raise money for cancer research. Teams seek sponsorship before the relay.

Overeater workshops

BREWER – The Central Maine Intergroup of Overeaters Anonymous will sponsor 16 mini-workshops, motivational speakers and related activities 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at St. Teresa’s Parish Hall, 440 Main St.

The event’s theme is “Voices of Recovery: Sharing Experience, Strength and Hope.” Workshop presenters will share techniques and strategies that helped them recover from compulsive eating.

Those who desire to stop eating compulsively or who are concerned about a friend or relative are welcome to attend the event.

Registration fee is $10 and planners suggest that participants bring a bag lunch. Refrigeration and beverages will be provided.

Overeaters Anonymous is a nonprofit fellowship of mutual support, composed of men and women recovering from compulsive overeating. It is not affiliated with any religion. The only requirement for membership is the desire to stop eating compulsively. The group does not require dues, fees or weigh-ins. Blood drive

BANGOR – A blood drive will be held noon-5 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Burlington Coat Factory. Each donor will receive a donor T-shirt as a token of appreciation. Donated blood stays in Maine to help patients of the Eastern Maine Medical Center Blood Drive Program.

To make an appointment to donate blood, call 262-8777. Walk-in donors also are welcome. Donors must meet eligibility requirements as outlined by the FDA, and are required to bring a photo ID.

No-Cost Screening Day

A Women’s No-Cost Screening Day will be held 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 12. Services will include a breast exam, Pap test and mammogram. To qualify, women must be 40 years or older, have no or limited health insurance and meet specific income guidelines. Preregistration is required. Sponsoring organizations are St. Joseph Regional Breast Care Center, Penquis Health, Penobscot Community Health Center, The Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center, and the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program of the Maine Department of Human Services. Nursing Home Week

BANGOR – In honor of National Nursing Home Week, Westgate Manor and a pharmaceutical company will sponsor a session on medication for Alzheimer’s disease 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at Westgate, 750 Union St. For information, call 942-7336.

Osteoporosis prevention

BANGOR – In observance of National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month in May, Pine Tree Physical Therapy is offering free osteoporosis prevention workshops. For information, call 942-2266.

Orthopedic clinic

BANGOR – The Anah Shriners and Anah’s Shrine Clubs will offer free screening clinics for children under 18 with orthopedic problems.

Shriner’s hospitals treat such problems as clubfoot, sclerosis, hand or back problems, bowed legs, spina bifida, dislocated hips, missing arms or legs, and problems associated with burns.

Parents should bring the child’s birth certificate and immunization records.

In Bangor, the clinic will be held 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 15, at the Anah Shrine Temple, 586 Main St.
