Creek, Harvey lead Black Bears

WORCESTER, Mass. – Chelsea’s Greg Creek threw 6 2/3 innings in a solid start and added a three-run homer and a single as Maine beat Holy Cross 7-2 Wednesday in college baseball action.

Shortstop Jason Harvey, a Bucksport native who transferred from Husson College, led the offense with a double, two singles and an RBI. Joe Hough had a double and a single while Aaron Izaryk and Joel Barrett of Brewer each had two singles. Izaryk drove in one run.

Creek allowed five hits and notched one strikeout with no walks for the no-decision.

Ryan Harris earned the win in relief after allowing one hit in 1 1/3 innings. Scott Robinson notched the save despite yielding a hit and a run in the ninth.

Tom Potvin led the Crusaders with a double and two singles.

Maine scored all of its runs in the final two innings as Holy Cross starter Rob Oteri limited the Bears to five hits over the first six innings, but gave up two runs in the seventh on back-to-back, one-out doubles by Harvey and Simon Williams, and a single to Izaryk. Maine’s other two runs came in the ninth via a Harvey single and an error.

The Black Bears are now 21-16 with a 6 p.m. home game against Colby College of Waterville Thursday.

Bowdoin 3, Husson 2

At Brunswick, Jared Lemieux singled three times and drove in a run to help lead the Bowdoin Polar Bears past the Husson Braves.

Bowdoin scored three runs with a bases-loaded, two-out walk in the sixth; a hit batter, stolen base, and two wild pitches in the seventh; and a hit batter, error, and RBI single by Readfield’s Lemieux in the 12th.

Husson scored its two runs with a Jason Folsom double, a groundout, and a Chris McInnis RBI double in the second; and an Adam Sheehan single, groundout, and two wild pitches in the eighth.

Millinocket’s Folsom, Winslow’s McInnis and Hampden’s Sheehan each had two hits for the Braves.

At Bangor, freshman Taralee Webster of Searsport earned the win to help get Husson College past Johnson State College in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal.

Husson’s Nicole Manzo led off the sixth inning with a double and took third on a passed ball, Brewer freshman Carolyn McAvoy walked and stole second, and Deanna Maxim walked before Manzo scored on a groundout. McAvoy and pinch-runner Elizabeth Hagerman then scored on back-to-back passed balls for the tying and winning runs.

McAvoy saved the game with a standout catch of a liner down the left-field line and Webster (9-6) ended the game with a strikeout. Manzo had two hits.

Husson is now 17-6 in the NAC and will take on either Lasell or Castleton State in a double-elimination semifinal series Friday and Saturday.

Nicole Hammill led Johnson State with three hits. Danielle Cote, Amanda Lockamy, and Sarah Bosc each had two.

At Chicopee, Mass., Tina Fontaine tied the game in the seventh with a three-run homer and the winning run scored on an error to give No. 1 Elms the win over No. 8 UMaine-Farmington in a North Atlantic College quarterfinal.

Cynthia Ravinski paced UMF with a double, single and two RBIs and Mary Berry added a single and double.

At Waterville, Joy Ireland didn’t allow a hit in five innings while striking out four and walking three as Thomas eliminated Becker in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal.

Courtney Corbett paced the Terriers with a triple, two singles and three RBIs and Kayla Beaudoin added a triple, single and two RBIs.

Babson sweeps Saint Joe’s

At Babson Park, Mass., the Saint Joseph’s Monks’ bats were silent as they picked up only eight hits in two games, both losses to Babson College, 4-2 and 4-1.

In the first game, Jamie Morrison notched an RBI groundout for Standish-based St. Joe’s. Kahler Dowling hit a double.

In the second game, Babson took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the third. Sarah Martin had a sacrifice RBI for the Monks’ lone run. Dowling went 3-for-3 with a triple and two singles.
