Bangor police arrested a man early Wednesday after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and prevented her from calling for help.
Officer Shawn Green reported that at about 1:30 a.m. he went with Officer Dennis Townsend and Sgt. Ed Potter to an Ohio Street address, where a woman was on the phone with state police dispatch reporting a domestic dispute.
Green said a man and woman opened the door. The woman was crying and holding a phone. She told him that she and her boyfriend, George Girodet, 24, of Bangor were arguing when she left the room and sat down at her computer.
Girodet came in and pulled the chair out from under her, the woman said, and then pushed her into the wall. When she tried to call police on her cell phone, Girodet allegedly grabbed it and pushed her onto a bed.
She said he then jumped on top of her, held her hands down and covered her mouth with his hand to quiet her.
The woman told Green that she managed to free herself and tried to call for help on another phone, but Girodet took that, too. When he eventually put the phones down, she called 911.
Green spoke with Girodet, who told him his girlfriend actually assaulted him because he wanted to go to his parents’ house. He showed Green a red area around his eye. The girlfriend told Green that Girodet had been hitting himself there.
Green said he told Girodet to put on his sneakers, because he was under arrest. Girodet said it was not fair that Green believed the woman, “just because she’s the girl.”
Girodet’s mother, who had arrived, told Girodet to do what Green said.
He was charged with domestic assault and obstructing the report of a crime.
A Bangor man allegedly threatened to kill himself if his girlfriend left their home Wednesday morning.
Bangor police Officer David Bushey reported that at about 8 a.m. he went to a store on Garland Street to speak with a woman who said she had been assaulted.
She told him that at about 6 a.m. she woke up and tried to leave the apartment she shared with William Ahrendt, 44, of Bangor. He refused to let her leave.
The woman said she and Ahrendt had lived together for two and a half months. She said he blocked the doorway to their bedroom and told her that if she left the apartment, he would kill himself.
When she tried to squeeze past him, Ahrendt allegedly pushed her onto the bed. He then held her down by her wrists, squeezing her right wrist so tightly that she couldn’t feel her hand, she said.
At about 8 a.m., the woman said she managed to get away and tried to call police, but Ahrendt pulled the cord out of the wall. She walked to a nearby store and called police from there.
Bushey said he went to the apartment to arrest Ahrendt but didn’t find him. Charges of assault, obstructing the report of a crime and violation of conditional release are pending.
