Spring vernal pools, the temporary forest ponds that serve as breeding and nesting sites for frogs and salamanders, are beginning to appear, and Maine Audubon has two publications available to help landowners and loggers work around them.
“Forestry Habitat Management Guidelines for Vernal Pool Wildlife” is available for $8. “Best Development Practices: Conserving Pool-Breeding Amphibians in Residential and Commercial Developments in the Northeastern United States” costs $10.
For a copy of either publication, contact Becca Wilson at 781-2330, Ext. 222, or send a check payable to Maine Audubon, 20 Gilsland Farm Road, Falmouth 04105.
