Mainers are receiving greetings and a request for support from Sharlene Grant of Broomfield, Colo., a member of the Leukemia Society’s “Team in Training” for the Suzuki Rock and Roll Marathon on Sunday, June 6, in San Diego.
She has pledged $3,800 to the Leukemia Society, and the deadline for your support and tax-deductible contribution is Saturday, May 22.
The Sedgwick native graduated from the University of Southern Maine and George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill.
Her mother, Rhoda Grant of Sedgwick, wrote that her daughter played four years of basketball in high school and grammar school, and also played soccer.
“In Colorado, she now includes Ultimate Frisbee in her activities,” her mother added. “Suffice it to say, I am extremely proud of my daughter, and wish her the best on her run.”
In her letter to friends and supporters, Sharlene Grant wrote she is competing “not only as a personal challenge” but also to help the Leukemia Society find a cure for this disease and other blood-related cancers.
Grant is running in memory of a friend who died of the disease, a family member “who lives with Hodgkin’s disease,” and a patient she was assigned “whom I have come to know during my training,” she explained.
And as she is training, she wrote, “I definitely draw strength from my thoughts of these people and their families.
“I realize that, no matter how painful the runs are for me, it can’t compare to the challenges that people with these diseases face every day.”
To help Grant meet her goal, donations made payable to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in her name can be sent to Rocky Mountain Chapter, 5353 W. Dartmouth Ave., Lower Level, Denver, CO 80227; by calling 303-984-2110; or by visiting www.teamintraining.org/rm.
Checks and credit cards are acceptable.
If you wish to write her, Grant’s address is P.O. Box 6932, Broomfield, CO 80021.
