Spring Swim Clinic

BANGOR – The Bangor YMCA and Bangor-Brewer YWCA are now taking registrations for the Barracudas Spring Swim Clinic for youth ages 6-18. The clinic will be held at the YWCA Aloupis Pool beginning Monday, May 17, and ending Friday, June 11, with no clinic on Monday, May 31. The cost is $35 for YMCA members and $45 for others. Preregistration is encouraged.

The clinic will be held every Monday through Thursday with youth ages 6-10 swimming at 4:30-5:30 p.m. and youth ages 11-18 swimming at 5:30-6:30 p.m. Swimmers will practice one stroke each week, learning basic stroke techniques along with starts and flip turns. In order to participate in the clinic, youth must be able to swim one length of the pool – 25 yards – in a crawl stroke with rhythmic breathing and one length of the pool in a back stroke, unassisted. This is not a “learn to swim” program.

Erika Haley, recently appointed head swim coach of the Barracudas Swim Team, will direct the spring swim clinic. Haley has taught swim lessons at the YWCA for the past six years and also teaches lifeguard and water aerobic classes. She began competitive swimming at age 10 with the Barracudas and continued to swim through her four years at Bangor High School. Previously, she was the assistant coach for the Hurricane Swim Club.

Elizabeth Smith, a swim instructor at the YMCA, will assist Haley throughout the clinic. Smith is the assistant coach of the YMCA-YWCA Barracudas swim team. She has been teaching and directing children’s swim programs for more than 15 years. She swam at Oklahoma State University and is a member of the USA Masters Swim Team.

For information about the swim team, call Haley at 941-2808.
