TOWNSHIP 24 – Forest rangers who handled the western Washington County wildfire that burned 148 acres last week have determined that arson was the cause of the fire.

“Every wildfire leaves clues that often lead forest rangers back to the point of origin,” said Jim Downie, spokesman for the Maine Forest Service. “This fire is no exception.

“Using years of experience, the rangers were able to quickly narrow down the origin site and determine exactly what vegetation or fuels burned first.”

Rangers will continue their investigation. Those who may know something about who may have been involved are asked to call 1-800-987-0257. Calls will be taken in confidence, Downie said.

The Maine Wildland Arson Reward Program offers rewards up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest or conviction of any wildland arsonist.

The fire near the Pleasant River burned Wednesday afternoon and into the evening.
