CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Mike Ferriggi went 4-for-5, stroking a two-run single to highlight a five-run first inning Wednesday while leading the University of Maine to an 8-4 baseball victory over Boston College at Shea Field.
Coach Paul Kostacopoulos’ Black Bears improved to 29-19 heading into a three-game America East series at Maryland Baltimore County that begins Friday.
UMaine jumped on the Eagles (29-23) for five quick runs in the first. Simon Williams led off with a single and Aaron Izaryk walked before Joel Barrett stroked a run-scoring double. Greg Creek delivered a two-run single and Ferriggi socked a two-run single to make it 5-0.
Creek (2-0) allowed only one earned run and five hits through 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. Greg Norton, Ryan Harris and Scott Robinson combined to finish out the contest.
Creek and Williams doubled and singled for UMaine, while Hough and Quintal singled twice in the 14-hit attack.
Ryan Morgan led the Eagles with a home run and a single.
Boston College scored in the second on Morgan’s solo home run, then added single runs in the third and seventh to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Eagles loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth and scored one run on a sacrifice fly.
However, an attempted delayed double steal resulted in UMaine shortstop Jason Harvey throwing out a runner trying to score, ending the inning.
The Bears finally got back on the scoreboard with three insurance runs in the ninth. Creek singled to right and Joe Hough beat out a bunt single.
Quintal plated a run with a single to right, then Pete Saunders followed with a run-producing pinch-hit single. Ferriggi capped the rally with an RBI single to left.
