Houlton High School
HOULTON – Principal Jerry Kiesman of Houlton High School has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2004. Commencement exercises will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at the Millar Arena in Houlton.
Claire Thompson, daughter of Robert and Dawn Matthew of Houlton and Robert Thompson of Alaska, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2004.
Thompson has been involved with the National Honor Society, civil rights team, peer helper, yearbook, spirit club, French club, chemistry club, physics club, math team, academic decathlon, band, chorus, jazz ensemble, HIV prevention conference, New England Young Writers’ Conference, church youth choir, and church youth group. She has received the MPA Principal’s Award, William College Book Award, University of Rochester Humanities-Social Science Award, Freshman English Award, and Principal’s Honor, and was a National Merit finalist.
Thompson was involved in youth in government, newspaper correspondent, agriculture commission, state treasurer; was treasurer and president of student council, class president; and was a big sister and peewee basketball coach. She participated in soccer and was on the all-state team in 2003, Eastern Maine Class B All-Star 2003, Class C All-Star 2003, Aroostook All-Star 2002 and 2003, Senior Bowl, DSA United Storm and DSA Holland Team. She also played basketball and was an Aroostook All-Star 2004 on the Maine McDonald’s All-State Academic Team and a Big East Scholar 2003, and played softball, volleyball and hockey.
Aimee Guy, daughter of Christopher and Kim Thompson of Houlton and Timothy and Marcella Guy of Houlton, has been named salutatorian for the Class of 2004.
She has been on the National Honor Society, received the Principal’s Award, Rotarian Award, University of Maine Scholastic Achievement Award, and the University of Maine Top Scholar Award. She received highest honors through her four years at Houlton High School and first place at the science fair as a freshman; she was a member of the Eastern Maine champion Class C girls soccer team.
Guy participated in varsity basketball as captain, varsity soccer as captain, varsity softball, hockey, student council, class secretary, band, youth and government, spirit club, peer helper, prom committee, yearbook committee and AAU basketball. She has been involved as a social service volunteer as a Big Sister, altar server and after-school Spanish program, and volunteers at Madigan Estates Nursing Home.
Jacob Callnan, son of Paul and Cindy Callnan of Houlton, has been named first honor essayist.
He has participated with the jazz band, Students Trying to Eliminate the Problems of Suicide, peer helpers, drama technical crew, junior class president, junior class king candidate for winter carnival, and took first place overall 2002 Houlton High School science fair, National Merit Commended Student, jazz combo, percussion ensemble and dollars for scholars committee.
Callnan is a member of the Military Street Baptist Church Praise band, is a Vacation Bible School volunteer leader, group work camp volunteer 2000, third and fourth grade Sunday school assistant, and will participate in the Rotary exchange to Italy in the summer of 2004.
Sarah Paige Stratton, daughter of Jonathan D. and Patricia A. Stratton of Houlton, has been named second honor essayist. She plans to attend Alderson Broaddus College in Philippi, W.Va., to study music education.
She has received the English award, National Honor Society, academic honors, and received the Principal’s Award. She has been a member of the French club and peer mentors, the show choir, musical productions, jazz band, jazz choir, chamber choir, all-Aroostook music festival, all-state music festival, concert band and chorus.
Stratton tutors fourth- through sixth-grade students at Southside School in Houlton, tutors underclassmen at Houlton High School and volunteers at Madigan estates. She is a member of the Military Street Baptist Church youth group and the Houlton community band.
